5 Reasons Vampires Are the New Bad Boys

5 Reasons Vampires Are the New Bad Boys

Vampires have long been a staple of romantic literature and movies, but with Twilight and True Blood, we're in the middle of a vampire sexual revolution.

In the latest issue of Nylon, True Blood star Stephen Moyer offers his theory as to why women are so drawn to vampires as sex symbols:

"The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view — you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a f*cking killer . . . it’s an interesting duality, because in our present society it would be an odd thing for a woman to say, 'I want my man to be physical with me.' . . . It’s difficult stuff for a bloke, but a vampire gets away with it."

Yikes! Vampires as sexual-domination fantasy? I hope that's not what the teenage Twihards are after. But it's hard to ignore the fact that for many modern young women, vampires are the new bad boys. Here are five good reasons why.

Edward Cullen and other vamps have replaced the old-school "bad boy" epitomized by James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, Johnny Depp in Cry-Baby, and Bender from The Breakfast Club. Drinking blood is now sexier than drinking and drugs — but why? Here are my theories as to why vampires are the new bad boys.

  1. They're bad, but not too bad. In books and movies, vampires are dangerous. But since most of us aren't dealing with vampires in real life — I hope! — it's a safe danger to fantasize about.
  2. Substance abuse isn't sexy. Sure, drinking blood is kind of gross, but it's also fantasy. For many teens, a fictional need to suck blood is easier to stomach than rebels with serious substance abuse issues like drinking, drugs, and DUIs.
  3. Eternal youth means eternal hotness. Vampires never age, therefore making them hot young things — like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt circa Interview With a Vampire — for all eternity.
  4. Vampires = 4-eva. Along with that whole eternity thing comes the possibility that vampire love can last forever. No commitment issues here!
  5. They're dark and mysterious. The whole concept of vampires appeals to fans of conspiracy theories and the idea that an unknown world just waits to be discovered.

So who do you think is right? Is Moyer on to something with his vampire-sex theory, or do you think it's something else that's making vampiric bad boys so desirable right now?

The sexual connotation comes from the idea of sucking blood and exchanging bodily fluids. Teens respond even better to this as they are frightened of actual physical intimacy and sex. Especially if the man who is supposedly "bad" but treats the woman kindly and intuitively, and doesn't actually hurt her. The bad guy but good to the girl- like Mr. Darcy or any other dark and mysterious character, who is portrayed as an evil character but who has a flaw of falling in love with someone who can ultimately enhance their positive and sensitive characteristics.

I was reading this post to my husband, trying to get him to understand why this whole "Vampire Scene" is sexy. I agree with the reasons above, and I love everyone's comments too. I like the fact that vampires are known as attentive, sexual, dominating and protective. All of those qualities are a real turn on for me, and possibly for others as well.

I've always thought vampires were sexy, but I've gotta say that I'm disappointed with the guy from True Blood. I don't really find him that attractive. Maybe I should try watching the show again since we have real HBO now. I only saw the show when it came in randomly and was sort of fuzzy. And I agree with cherryblossom. Vampires have always been the perfect bad boys.

Oops, forgot to add that points 3 and 4 are void. It's the vampires that never age - not you. Unless you change into one, you don't really benefit.

Hiding55 - I agree...Eric from Trueblood is sexy and dangerous, likes to be in control and yet he can be sensitive and protective (especially in the books). I must say I am happy Tres chose a Trueblood pic instead of one of the Twilight guys. Although I would have liked the pic to have been Eric - he's the ultimate sexy/bad vampire, IMO.

Previous poster has a good point. Eric from True Love if one of the hotest guys around and seems to be leaning toward loving Sookie. Edward from Twilight is truly sweet and caring. He would give his life for Bella. You can't beat that for fantasy and a good love story.

It's the bad boy aspect that does it for me. Eric from Trueblood is my top fantasy right now. So sexy and evil yet you know (or hope) there is a sweet guy under there who will protect you at all costs. Oh the lust of it all!

good points, but since when are vampires the NEW bad boys, vampires have been around in stories for a long long time now, to me they arent the new bad boys they have always been all these points in my mind, but i really really really am hating how its becoming a fad.

Plus fictional characters like them, have time to think about relationships and how unbearable eternity is if the person is not the right one, so when the time comes they are super devoted and wise. Bad boy + devoted + wise = hot

I would agree with these reasons. I completely agree to the point of a guy being a perfect gentleman who then has this other wild and crazy side to him.

I just have to agree with one point. Perfectly mannered old fashioned gentleman that's actually a hardcore crazy bad boy, is like the perfect mix of sweet and bad boy sexy. It's like guys these days that are chivalrous and well mannered like flickster said tend to also be the pushovers. And confident sexy guys tend to also be the assholes. Vampires these days are the best of both worlds without the bad parts. So it's not the vampire thing at all for me. Take the vamp part away but leave the same personality, and it would still be the perfect guy personality.

not even gonna say it anonymously. I think sexual domination fantasies are awesome, also with the ideas of vampires like Bill Compton from true blood, is that he's right! They're chivalrous, well mannered men, who aren't afraid to take charge, are strong, confident, and usually sexy. i can i say honestly would looooooooooove to have a little romp with someone like that, because sorry, my beloved boyfriend cannot pick me up and carry me, and likes to take charge about as much as I do most of the time.

6. They don't exist. Just kinda think that should be thrown in. It's like unicorns. If they had a show about unicorns, it would be a hit. I'm sure of it.
