ATF Under Bush Cannot Account For Many Missing Weapons, Laptops The "F" part goes missing? The Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives had 76 weapons and 418 laptop computers lost, stolen, or go missing in a five-year period through 2007, according to a report released on Wednesday. The report said the bureau, known as the ATF, had serious weaknesses in its controls over weapons, laptops, and ammunition, with much of the problems due to employee carelessness and failure to follow policy.

The number of agencies under the Bush Administration that have reported losing large quantities of things like laptops, weapons, and personal information is quite surprising. On the one hand, Bush cannot be expected to keep track of everything himself. On the other hand, as the president, part of his job was to put together a competent administration that could serve the needs of the American people - therefore, ulimately, blame for the failures of HIS administration do lie with him.

I would also like to know that UnDave, but it might just be another example for people to blame him for anything under the sun. We had theft in our office, is that Gov Charlie Crists fault?

I'd like to know how Bush is responsible for the ATF's lack of oversight for their own employees? As soon as an employee looses a computer, they should've been tossed. Is it not suprising that another government agency is rife with corruption?

and this is Texas where the average person in the grocery store would know that.

I'd say both. I've known three ATF agents for over 10 years.

GS, do you know them personally or in their capacity as ATF Employees? Because every single one who has come into my husband's store has been terrible. And not that actual weapons knowledge is actually required for the job, but most couldn't tell a 1911 from a revolver if they had to.

Go back and count, you'll find it's about even or that conservative links (Townhall, Malkin) are ahead. I tracked it for myself at one point.

Steph, you can't honestly think they are the same number of links. Townhall randomly get's lumped in a link time thread while huffpo gets these little single threads. And just coming back at me with a similar statement but from your side is getting really old.

Probably the same deal they get from linking to Townhall.

Inside job ---- I wonder how much they get on the blk market.

MM, I know several ATF employees who are NOT terrible at their jobs.

Does sugar get some kind of credit for linking to huffpo? Seems like a daily thing.

Hardly surprising. The ATF is so amazingly terrible at their jobs.

The ATF has been under fire for this for YEARS. They supposedly "lost" all the weapons from the Waco seige years ago too. I would think there would have been a complete overhaul of the system back THEN, why are they just now surprised? Oh I forget, it's the government we're talking about.

Maybe it's just me, but the ATF seems like an organization that really should have some good inventorying and loss prevention strategies in place.

Maybe it's news when an agency of the Bush Administration doesn't lose anything.
