Address To Impress

Dear Sugar
What is the proper way to address wedding invitations? We would like to add the man and woman's name, i.e. Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Doe. Is this format ok?

Dear Unsure Uma
The technically proper way to address a formal invitation to a married couple is by using the male's name. Mr. and Mrs. John Doe (spell out the and). However, in these modern times, the male and female in a couple may have different last names. If that is the case then you would write; Mr. John Doe (on line 1) and Mrs. Jane Smith (on the line below). It is in the thank you card that you would write both of their first names if you were to address them informally. Dear Jane and John (ladies first in this case) . . . It's not common practice to write Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Doe. Having said all of this, it is your wedding and you are more comfortable writing both names, go for it, not every detail is worth fighting over!
