Bristol Palin Interview in Harper's Bazaar

Bristol Makes Teen Pregnancy Unstylish in Harper's Bazaar

Though June's Harper's Bazaar interview with Bristol Palin is meant to be a lighthearted look at America's favorite teen mom, the cautionary tale of teen pregnancy lies beneath nearly everything Bristol says.

On being pregnant during the 2008 election: "It was kind of humiliating. . . . Great, I'm 17 years old, I'm 40 pounds overweight with a big belly on me, all my friends are at school watching this on the news. This kind of sucks."

On her life's unexpected turn: "I thought I would be somewhere warm at college with my friends," she says. "But that was definitely not possible with having Tripp."

To see what she has to say about life as a single mom, keep reading.

On life as a single mom: "I don't ever have time for friends or anything like that. . . . It's just like, right, crap, there is a hockey game tonight that I want to go to but I can't. Or, I do have to go to work today, because I've got bills to pay."

To be fair, things are also looking up for Bristol. She recently bought a townhouse in Anchorage, and her days working at a dermatologist's office are broken up with taping commercials, appearing on TV shows, and visting talk shows like Oprah, which can command up to $30,000 an appearance. But all this requires her to talk about how having a baby ruined her life.

A word of unsolicited advice for Bristol: she could make more if she told us what she really thought!

Aw, Bristol cannot go to a hockey game on quick notice, woe is her. All she can do is buy a townhouse make up $30k for one appearance, meet Oprah, etc... Poor thing. How about she change her tune; to be grateful for having a healthy child, for her 15 minutes of "fame" which are helping her bank account (and hopefully adding to a college fund for Tripp) and being in good health herself and not having to struggle like so many others. Instead it is all "feel sorry for me" which I doubt will help her relationship with her son when he is able to read & understand these interviews someday. The girl needs to stop having or acting out a selfish mentality and grow-up to the realization it is not all about her.

She bought a townhouse -- how many single mothers at her age (or anyone at her age, for that matter) can afford to do that? I am so tired of the "woe is me" when the great majority of girls in her position do not have nearly the kind of money and support she has.

This girl needs to go back to Alaska and shut up. I'm tired of her trying to be the "voice of experience" and encouraging abstinence when she personally knows that abstinence is not the answer and did not practice it herself. I feel bad for her son since she is selfish and complaining about him inconveniencing her social and personal life. Funny, though, that her pregnancy is the reason for her "public speaking tours" and her $30k paydays. I agree with all the above posters. ^

It really sucks for her that she sees her kid as such a burden. I sort of like mine.

Yeah, I pretty much hate her.

Please dont use the word "ruined" when talking about how your child affected your life, or someone else's for that matter. I certainly do not encourage teen pregnancy, but maybe in addition to talking about how "hard" her life is, discuss what a blessing her son has been instead of bitching about a decision that she can't take back. She might be a teen mom, but she is 19, making more than most people make in a year for a few hours of work, buying a town house and I'm sure has more help than most mothers ever get.

I feel so bad for that kid. All his mother does is complain about how he ruined her life! Poor thing, bet he'll feel loved when reading all of this. My pregnancy also wasn't planned and while I wasn't a teenager I still had to cope with the fact that things have changed and I can't go out whenever I want. But I would never complain because I chose to have her and she's everything to me. And most of all I'd never want her to think I regret having her!

There are countless things that annoy me about the Palins, but at this minute, I'm especially annoyed by the fact that she constantly acts as though she's the only single mom in the United States working hard to raise a child. And she doesn't even acknowledge that she has it easier than most, in that most working moms have to work at actual jobs rather than just going on TV and doing tabloid interviews. Fifteen years from now, I'm sure Tripp is really going to enjoy reading about how he completely ruined every aspect of his mother's life.
