Bush Says He's Open to Suggestions on Next Gig — Got Any?

Bush Says He's Open to Suggestions on Next Gig — Got Any?

When People magazine asked President Bush what he wants to do once he's out of the Oval Office, he said:

"It's hard to tell, hard to imagine what it's like to go from 100 miles an hour to five. I'm going to want to build a policy institute at Southern Methodist, probably write a book. And beyond that, I'm open for suggestions."

Prior to his two terms as President of the United States, Bush served as Texas Governor, acted as part owner of the Texas Rangers, worked on his dad's 1988 Presidential campaign, and put in some time in the energy business. He has a bachelors in history from Yale, and an MBA from Harvard.

Based on that resume, do you have any suggestions for what Bush should do after Air Force One drops him off back in Texas?

Cater- "Cake" being slang for "easy" or "effortless." Because he's really the opposite of everything that a writer usually is (grammatically with an expansive vocabulary). "I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe — I believe what I believe is right." —Rome, Italy, July 22, 2001

krae, I'm hooked on Texas football and I've been watching Colt ever since he was a redshirt freshman. Love him, love the team, loved that freakin' game last night. I heard he's gonna stick around through his senior year, so we'll see what happens. :)

janneth i didnt see where it said he doesnt have any offers or plans for his future. This is a casual interview with People Ragazine, he is going to be completely un serious, and probably is thinking about what to do in his free time, because former presidents are a very busy lot doing lectures, philanthropy, etc. Is he supposed to list an entire dossier of what he is going to do? I would want him to be involved with the families of 9/11 in making sure that the memorials are built, to be involved with military families of Iraq war veterans and ones who are still enlisted because many of them respect and love him. He is a man full of charisma and Joy and Faith and he should always rely on those attributes to get him through the times ahead. What he should not do is atone for whatever mistakes people have thought he has made, with a concrete ball chained to his leg, begging for forgiveness and wasting his time pandering to his enemies. he is better than that.

I see what you're saying Hain, I guess some people must have missed the part where people were shooting at the National Guard who WAS THERE TRYING TO HELP THEM. So yea, I can see why you'd think some might be unappreciative. Some people just like to stick their head in the sand and place blame on the closest scapegoat instead of looking at the reality of the situation. Also, I don't see where in this post it says that he has had no offers. I think we might need to read a bit more carefully.

Ok, Viggo Mortensen can pull it off. There's always an outlier!

I think it is sad that he doesn't have any plans after office. Apparently he has checked out of ALL aspects of his life, not just the presidency. I'd like to see him quietly doing some good domestically -- as many have mentioned, working the Gulf Coast would be a nice fit -- without much media coverage and fanfare. Say what you want about the man (and I am no fan of his), but he seems much more suited to using his money and time away from much limelight.

I think the one guy who pulls it off remotely well in real life would be Johnny Depp, but he doesn't get quite as greasy as Farrell. And, uh, Viggo Mortensen in the Lord of the Rings movies. Aragorn!

Yes. Yes. And Yes. I think I just have an aversion to long greasy looking hair.
em1282 em1282 8 years
Good point, sarah. But even then, he starts talking and it's like, "What greasy hair?" ;) OK, fine. You *almost* think that, but not quite. I like his SWAT/Tigerland/In Bruges looks. HAWT.

He's super hot em, except when he does the long haired dirtbag look. Yowza.

Funny you say that, because the Katrina victim that my friend housed while he transferred to Northwestern had gratitude seeping out of every pore every single day he was here. But hey, guess that was just one grateful person.
em1282 em1282 8 years
Hain, you keep telling people to read your comments, but maybe you should read other comments as well. I never said anything about you proving anyone wrong. What you did or didn't do to help or not help victims of Katrina is your business, not mine. Soooo...yeah.
krae85 krae85 8 years
I don't know why ya'll are picking on Hainan, Katrina victims WERE unappreciative. You know how I know? I live right next door in Southeast Texas, you know Texas, where people are prepared for the hurricanes that come every five to ten years. When they bussed the people from New Orleans to Houston they left garbage EVERYWHERE, bitched and complained the entire time, raked in all the free money they could get and thought the federal government should fix what their state government messed up by being unprepared. We experienced Rita right after Katrina and many many people lost their homes, my hometown was wrecked, and no one complained and when people came to help we said thank you.
