California Becomes First State To Ban Trans Fats
California on Friday became the first state to ban trans fats from restaurant food, following several cities and major fast-food chains in erasing the notorious artery-clogger from menus. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation that will ban restaurants and other retail food establishments from using oil, margarine and shortening containing trans fats. "Today we are taking a strong step toward creating a healthier future for California," he said.

UD, is it weird that I now want to try Lutefisk? That is a good method, BTW. And those cookies keep!

Jude - I have a very similar plan when purchasing/eating Thin Mints. 1) Buy Thin Mints, and place in foil. 2) Mark on foil "Lutefisk" (Cod soaked in lye for three days, then boiled) 3) Place in back of freezer 4) Take out and eat one sleeve. 5) Put rest of the box back in the freezer. Using this method, I have saved a box from '05.

My little cousins were addicted to the 100 calorie GS packs. In order for me to try one, I had to get her to look away while I stole just one!! It was horrible, but so good at the same time

I didn't know Girl Scout cookies had 100 Calorie Packs! My usual Thin Mint strategy is just: 1) Take a fresh box out of the freezer, and 2) Finish in one sitting, using a big stick to hit anyone who tries to take any from me. I don't really like any other Girl Scout cookies. Samoas (I think?) are okay, but it was the Thin Mints I was buying in bulk. Ugh. Let me decide how I'm going to clog my arteries and shave years off my life, please, Governator.

I agree, Jude! I was all excited to try out the Thin Mint Blizzard, but now I just don't know. They have the Cinna-Spins, isn't that enough! (The Girl Scouts 100 Calorie Packs; they're actually quite good!)

A fitting eulogy, hunter!

I KNOW! It totally sucks...now I have no reason to stop at the Girl Scout Cookie Table set up outside of the supermarkets every few months. :mob: Bring back original recipe Thin Mints!

Let's focus on the good things of Thin Mints in this tragic moment: -They are great any time -You get more cookies per serving than any other GS cookie -Fabulous to eat frozen -They are just as good in ice cream ... I heart you Thin Mints

What!?!? Jude, you have made me very sad and upset.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not my Thin Mints!

This lady on the radio said they've changed the Girl Scout Thin Mint recipe so that it doesn't have trans fats anymore, and that they don't taste the same now. That makes me sad.

Oreo's were on sale when I sent shopping on Friday. We got two packages. I don't even like them, but felt I had to get them for some reason. Now I know why...

:( I miss my trans fats! Yes, I know they are unhealthy, but everything tasted soooooo much better with them.

Jill, you are just tempting me to get some Oreos now! You are just too cruel!! Question for you though, what's better home made cookies and milk or Oeros that are slightly soggy in milk? :ponder:

I just want to say, Thank a lot Jill!!! I got a big old bag of double stuffs at the grocery store last night. They are fabulous!!

And I don't care what people say, things taste different when they are made without trans fat. I think we should be more concerned with counseling people to make wise food choices at a young age than with making the choices for them. We still have freedom here! I mean, I'm pretty sure the right to eat trans fat was included somewhere in the first amendment.

I don't agree with the trans fat ban. It is not the governments job to save us from ourselves. Making it clear a product has trans fats in it, I would understand. But an out right ban takes the decision making out of consumers hands. :notworthy:, Jill. You said it best.

That is the best Hunter, when they are soft...

What we really need is a ban on Trans Ams. Seriously, they degrade us all.

I never have a craving for Oreos but reading Jill's comments it makes me want to eat a lot. I love to dunk it in that milk and let it get almost to the point it breaks then eat it :feedme:

Ditto!! Mmmm. Crap, now I have to go buy some oreos. Thanks guys

I'd be willing to go to commit civil disobedience for an Oreo!

What's the next step, banning them from supermarkets and making it illegal to eat them, period? Will people eventually be prosecuted for eating unhealthily? I don't like this one bit.

Lainetm, doesn't Arnie also want to drop their wages not just to minimum wage, but to the federal minimum...which is lower than California's standards? I don't agree with the trans fat ban. It is not the governments job to save us from ourselves. Making it clear a product has trans fats in it, I would understand. But an out right ban takes the decision making out of consumers hands. I LOVE double stuff Oreos. I only eat them 1 or 2 times a year because they are so bad for you, but I think it is really wrong for the government to come in and make it illegal for me to get them. What is next, do we get busted for possession? The fact is trans fats are not the cause of obesity. They might be a small factor, but the obesity problem is not going to be solved by removing them. You can't ban all unhealthy food, and there is plenty of food that is really bad for you that does not have trans fats.

California government should get out of my private life and pass a @$#@! state budget already. We're going to hit a cash flow crisis sometime around August 1, I hear. In an alleged attempt to postpone this, Arnie wants to cut the salaries of all state workers to minimum wage. That's Highway Patrol, prison staff, etc. How deranged is that? Of course, the legislature is insisting on increasing taxes. God forbid they cut expenditures! It's much more productive to drive more of the tax base out of the state.
