Clip From 30 Rock About Settling Soulmates

Settling Soulmates — Grim or Practical?

On last night's episode of 30 Rock, Liz Lemon runs into her "future husband" again and he asks her to grow old with him — in separate bedrooms. You see Liz meet this man when they were both totally drugged out at the dentist office. She entered him into her iPhone as "future husband " and he puts her in as "future wife," but after seeing each other later they realize they don't actually hit it off.

The universe doesn't seem to care though, and Liz continues to see "future husband" everywhere. On last night's episode, he runs into her following an accident on his foot cycle. He decides that it's dentistry destiny, and proposes. He explains: "Fate is telling us this is the best we're ever going to get. We're each other's settling soulmates."

He thinks they both would benefit: he could open jars for her and she could make him look less gay at work functions. As for romantic love? Whatever! He asks Liz, "How many couples do you know that are actually in love, that don't completely annoy each other?" It's clear Liz has not been swept off her feet, but I do sense a little chemistry — so maybe giving your settling soulmate a shot wouldn't be so bad.

I can't answer in general, but for Liz's case i kept wishing she would just get with him. he's too annoying in a cute way :)

I tried it. It didn't work very well. Now my "settling soulmate" and I are trying to raise a child from opposite sides of town, berating ourselves for the fact that our marriage didn't work out. I don't know about him, but I'm feeling more free than ever. There are some things that are more important than having a life partner.

Well, I guess it COULD work, I just don't think the example on 30 Rock was a good example of it. Liz and Wesley could barely be around each other without bickering, so why bother? But if it were a different situation, like you actually get along with the person and care for them, even if you're not madly in love or whatever, then yeah maybe it could work.

I will go for a combination of the two. Love is very important, but it's not everything, love can't make a relationship work. I could never be with someone that I don't love, but he also has to be the compatible with what I want from life.

I'm not the easiest person to get along with... I might have to just settle for a soulmate.
