10 Common Reoccurring Dreams

Whether you think dreams are a window to the unconscious or just exercise for the brain, we all dream the same things. Sure the details vary, and we interpret them differently, but studies show themes transcend culture.

A new study set out to see what dreams are the most common and which reoccur (more than three times) the most frequently only to find that dream prevalence and reoccurrence are rarely the same.

Being a child again and being the object of a celebrity's affection (aka, erotomania) are the most common, yet they almost never reoccur. However, dreaming of your teeth falling out or being physically attacked are rare dreams, but those who experience them do so often.

So let's put some dream paranoia to rest once and for all by looking at 10 of the most common reoccurring dreams below.

  • School, teachers, and studying
  • Searching for a place
  • Falling
  • Eating delicious food
  • Being chased
  • Losing control of a vehicle
  • Flying
  • Being physically attacked
  • Teeth falling out
  • Not being able to find a toilet

Have you had any?

I had the teeth one a couple times... but the one that has been reoccurring since I was real little is viscous bear attacks. Bears just ripping people into pieces or chasing me down hallways.. never got me though. Wonder what that means.

I also have dreams of relatives that have passed away. Mostly my grandmother. I'll be talking to her and sometimes my cousins are there (all still living) and my grandmother's dog is sometimes there as well. I always wake up sobbing from those dreams. They feel very real and I always remember them vividly.

I've had the tooth dream before. Sometimes me teeth are crumbling out of my mouth and sometimes they are just missing. The one where they are crumbling and I am spitting them into my hands is the most disturbing. I wake up and immediately run my tongue across all my teeth just to make sure they are still there. My most common reoccurring dream is being held captive in a basement or some sort of room with no windows. I'm always with some random person from my life. I've been having this dream for as long as I can remember. I guess I feel trapped.

I have the teeth falling out/or loose teeth one quite a bit. Annoys the heck out of me. I also fly quite a bit in my dream but that also results in the falling feeling. I hate that part. Like I'm crash landing back into my body and jolt awake, flopping out of bed onto the floor. Ugh. There was this one time I was having a nightmare (dunno of what though) and my husband had to wake me up out of the dream because I was scratching myself, neck, arms, face, so much I started to bleed. Weird.

I always dream I'm pregnant and I don't even know who the father is. I always tell my self this in the dream, " But I don't remember having sex."

I have dreams about high school all the time. Usually, it's the first day of school, I'm late and I don't know what class I'm supposed to go to because I don't know what day in the rotation it is. I go to physics/gym/choir. Then I realize that I need to go to calc/english/art/spanish/technology class because I haven't been in weeks because of choir rehersal. We're having a test/I have a paper/project due and I know none of the material. Or I'm in gym class showing off to my gym teachers that I'm actually physically fit now. Or we have rehearsal for the school musical. I never even get a part in my dreams :(

i have reoccurring dreams in which my best friend and i investigate various things. most recently, witchcraft (there was some sort of communal sleep arrangement going on involving me in a bunk bed and him in a washing machine...). past investigations have also tended to involve penguins (who are either being investigated or aiding in the investigations)...

I'm surprised working isn't on the list. I always have dreams where I'm at work, I have since I started my first job at 16! It sucks to dream about working all night only to wake up and have to actually work :(.

Just two days ago I had the weirdest dream, where I was hallucinating in the dream. Like, in the dream I realized I was hallucinating because I was seeing something really weird and started running to my parents room - a dream within a dream. Must have been some late repercussions of seeing Inception :P

Oh...and I have the teeth one too. Except my teeth aren't falling out. They're either loose or it feels like I'm chipping one and I wake up and my teeth clank together. I hate that one!

For the entire 5 1/2 years I was with my ex I had dreams about rollercoasters...sometimes I'd be back at the same amusement park...sometimes not. But when we broke up I stopped having them. That was a very bad and stressful relationship too so the dreams kind of made sense because our relationship felt like a rollercoaster ride. I often have dreams that I'm back on my high school cheerleading squad and I've either forgotten the routine or I can't find my bloomers. Another one is that I'm back in high school and it's the end of the semester and I'm thinking about my grades and realize I've only been to my English class once or twice and I'm afraid I won't have enough grades to average out a good final grade.

That's why I can't do those "dream moods" type websites. Pretty sure the teeth falling out dream was me feeling anxious about not being able to care properly for my teeth due to financial constraints. You know. Since I'd never had a dream like that previous to finding out about the cavities. Sometimes there isn't a "deeper meaning".

I use all the time to analyze my dreams. About the teeth falling out dreams - one theory is that dreams about your teeth reflect your anxieties about your appearance and how others perceive you. Another may be your fear of being embarrassed or making a fool of yourself in some situation.

Lately I've been having dreams where I'm back in high school and the bell rings, but I never know where my next class is! I end up wandering the halls trying to find my class, but never do. The last dream I had about being in class I made a point of looking at where my next class was, and knew exactly where I was headed! I woke up feeling like I finally found a sense of direction in my life, and now all I have to do is put it into action! Also, every time I watch Die Hard I have the same nightmare - me, my dad and my sister are in this cramped basement of a church running and hiding from these bad guys are trying to kidnap us - it freaks me out every time and now I refuse to watch the movie.

I was in a few car accidents in a row and had a bunch of dreams about losing control of a car. I also have recurring dreams (nightmares) that I'm pregnant and trying to find an adoptive family.
