Dating Younger Men

How Young Is Too Young?

Yesterday Jon Hamm lamented about the new male model being an adolescent boy. He has a point! It's hard enough to find a guy our own age to act mature — things can only get more difficult when you go younger.

Emotional maturity can trump absolute years and many of us have a younger celebrity crush. But if older becomes grosser at some point, where do you draw the younger line?

I'm currently being pursued by a guy who's 10 years younger than me. Hasn't even hit 30. He doesn't yet carry the baggage that might hold him back from professing love and speaking poetically about all my wonderful qualities. He even says he'd be ready to have a baby, one of my current longings. But what happens five years from now when he's got a better sense of who he is and I'm a touch more saggy?

You know what they say, if there's grass on the field, play ball! Seriously though, I'm 25 and 22 or 23 would probably be my limit now, but that may change. 10 years older is usually my limit for dating, but just for sex I've gone much older than that.

I always thought I wouldn't date someone younger than me, but when you meet someone and have a strong connection, and that connection grows stronger the more you get to know them, you learn that age doesn't really matter. Emotional maturity does. I'm 31 and and have recently started dating someone 6 years younger than me. At first I felt really weird about it, because he's my 'little sister's' age, but there is such a difference in maturity that he might as well be my age. My ex was two years older than me and couldn't seem to pull his life together, it seemed like he was stuck in his early 20's... I'm learning that age is just a number. It's the person themselves that matter.

Does it differ for guys and girls? Its no secret that girls mature way faster than guys, but if the girl is younger is it a bigger/smaller deal than if the guy is younger? I only ask this because my Aunt is 9 years younger than my Uncle and they seem perfectly happy. Also my mom always says that age is but a number its where you are in life that counts. If you are both in the same place and want the same things does age truly matter?

I just don't date any guy who is unable to get into a bar legally. That being said, I have never dated younger. Always older. I am 23 and I would probably place my limit at 33, although I have never dated a guy ten years older.

Five years younger is my max and even then I'd feel squicky about it. It would be like crushing on my younger brothers and sister. As for older, ten years is my max because then it would feel like I'm dating my parents. But, I'm married to a man whose birthday is today, which is only 5 months ahead of me and that's perfect. He's now 34 and I will be 34 soon, lol.

Spiderlove, is that you in your avatar? You look younger than 39 for sure! You have beautiful skin. (Not that 39 is old at all, you just look even younger.) Anyway, in real life, I would say 5 years younger is the absolute max I would go. I'm 27 and couldn't possibly see myself dating a guy not out of college. As I get older, I will probably widen my age bracket. As far as celebrities go, I can look at someone like Taylor Lautner and say he's cute in the way that, if I was in high school, I know I would be more attracted to him than to Robert Pattinson. I can't really think of an actor who's younger than me whom I could call hot.

I'm 39 and my man is 35.... you'd think by this age, the man would be as mature, but no, they still aren' (love him to bits, though!)

I'm 20 and right now I would only go a year or two younger. I'm pretty sure when I'm older I wouldn't go younger then 4 years.

I used to read Perez Hilton alot (I stopped for various reasons) but one of the reasons I don't visit that page anymore is because that 30-something would say disgusting things about minors! He would drool all over Lautner. I am 23 and I probably wouldn't date someone younger than me. Maybe a year or two...I guess it's different when you're in your 30's or older because where I am at in my life, those few years actually matter in terms of maturity.

Skigurl said it perfectly. 18, legally obviously, but generally 4-5 years max, which for some sugar readers would be age 18. I say this now, but when I'm 40 I'll probably want a stunning 25 year old or something.

I agree with skigurl--4 to 5 years max.

I've been dating a guy who's four years younger than I am, but he's more mature than the older guy I dated last year. With that said, yes, I sometimes feel like I'm robbing the cradle. Or at least the playpen.

Justin Beiber and Taylor Lautner, though adorable, are too young. I think age 18 (hello legal!) is a good rule of thumb for celebrity "crushes"...but like in terms of actually dating a younger man in real life, I don't know...3 years my junior? maybe 4-5 maximum. MAXIMUM!
