Dear Poll: Did you Think Samantha was too Promiscuous?

Kim Cattrall played Samantha Jones on Sex and the City for six seasons. Her character brought a sexually free female to life, offering all women out there someone they could relate to; someone with a heart, someone who wasn't afraid of what others thought. While Samantha's character might have taken female single life to an extreme, many women do in factr live it up when they are commitment free, just like any man would. But what I want to know is, did you think Samantha Jones was too promiscuous?

I think she was just an exaggurated character, its all in a bit of fun. I wouldn't go to her extremes, but meh.

Wow, I can't believe people think that her behavior was ok. That blows my mind.

Maybe it's because I'm more of a 'Charlotte' girl but I just thing 3/4 of the stuff Samantha did was just way trashy, over the top, and slutty. By the end of the series I was just fast forwarding through her storyline anyway. Do you people really act like that 24/7??? What's so wrong with a little chase to get what you want?

That show was such BS! You've got 4 'independent' women in their 30s. They are successful and fun. They don't need a man to define them! They don't crave marriage and babies like those other silly women do! They date many men. They sleep with many men. They are living the feminist dream! Right? Wrong! In the end, they all ended up making HUGE sacrifices for the men they wanted. Carrie gave up living her dream in Paris. Miranda gave up live in Manhattan and a career for Brooklyn and Steve and baby Brady Hobbs-Brady. Charlotte changeed her religion! Even Samantha had to admit that being in a close, committed, monogamous relationship was the way to go. They all ended up becoming those things they used to despise about other women. I don't have a problem with Sam and Co embracing their sexuality, but don't put down others who are less slutty than thou art, and then become one of them!

I think Samantha was a woman who embraced her sexuality. Being that promiscuous and open is fine if you're safe. And remember, they Samantha even got TESTED for STD's on the show, which I think sent a good message. Protecting yourself isn't enough, you need to be "in the know".

Uh, sorry to jump in on this again, but I feel the need to question the information Beth provided that having one partner is just as dangerous as having multiple. I don't have hard facts from anywhere to back this up, but basic math and common sense would absolutely lead me to the opposite conclusion, which is that people who have multiple partners are much more likely to catch and spread STIs. And for everyone railing against a double standard, I think most women judge men and women equally for having what they consider to be "too many" sexual partners. In other words, men and women who sleep around are equally slutty. So you are preaching to the choir. The typical "stud" vs. "slut" mentality, to me, has always been a guy thing. A guy who gets lots of ass, to another guy, is a stud, whereas a girl who has had lots of partners isn't as desirable because she's easy or a slut.

She's safe, she's having fun, and she's doing what she wants to do with her life! You go girl!

I think she was just fine how she was. "young girls" - college aged girls - who watched sex and the city but weren't smart enough to know how to live safely and practice safe sex must have had a very sheltered life. At 20+ years old you should be able to make decisions for yourself; some fictional character on a tv show shouldn't be anyone's role model. Some people see sex as an intimate thing that should only occur with someone you love. Others take sex more casually and enjoy the pleasure. So what? Don't forget that having sex with one person doesn't mean you're avoiding any std, stis, or pregnancy. It's just as dangerous. So don't throw stones unless you're a V.

Pfffft, sex is not always "special" or "intimate". Sometimes, it's just the quickest way to an orgasm.

Although I don't think there are women like that in the real world, her character didn't feel unrealistic either. I loved her!

I just think that it is unsafe. My roommate and I counted (we have the DVD set) and she had around 2,000 partners. That's just too many!! :)

Promiscuity is not okay. It's wrong that "playing the field" is okay for men. Even if you're safe, condoms fail. Many diseases like herpes and HPV are spread from skin contact. Having loads of sex partners, especially other promiscuous sexual partners, just multiplies these risks so many times over. It's important to engage in safer sex. Part of that is not sleeping around time. I also think the other women on the show were kinda "easy." While there's nothing wrong with having sex and having fun, Samantha seemed to be the only one who was genuinely having fun and the others got really emotionally involved with the guys they've seen once or twice then decide to sleep with, leading to heartbreak. In spite of Samantha's many sex partners, she's the one who had the closest to having a healthy sex life.

Women can have sex with as many or as few partners as they choose, but I think Sam's a bit exaggerated as she is a fictional character. Great show though! :)

I think she embellished a type of women as there must be in real life. Women should always feel free and enjoy to have a safe sex life, and stop comparing ourselves with how many sexual partners men have... I loved her and thought she was the most talented of the four actresses

Let me clarify a little... When I talk about the young girls that she influenced, I am not talking about children. I am talking about teenagers and young adults. I was in college when this show was really big. There is enough random sex going on already and girls just coming into their sexuality saw this character (and the others, I agree they were all having a lot of sex)as what was "normal". While were at it, I wouldn't say what they were doing was safe sex. Using condoms and other protection provides safer sex, but you can still transfer diseases. And that is just physical health. I agree with the boyfriend that she was an unhappy character. Sex is intimate. Sex with lots of people, not so intimate. I think it takes an emotional toll on people, myself and my friends included. And yes, it is my opinion, that's what all these comments are.

bjf, that is your opinion. Who says dating a lot or sleeping with those men you date is a bad thing? Everyone has their own morals. As long as you are safe and not hurting anyone, more power to ya! As for being a bad influence on young girls, I REALLY don't think that one character on an adult HBO show influenced that many young girls. For one, it is the parents responsibility to monitor what their children watch as well as instilling in them the morals they want them to have. As long as you are not hurting anyone, I think we should all be free to live our lives on our own terms! Go Samantha!

Samantha was a fabulous character, they all were, but most women do not have nearly as much sex as those girls were having. Even Charlotte, protrayed as the innocent one, was falling into bed with someone new at least weekly. There certainly are women who have had 20,30,50 sexual partners and more, and are having a great time, but that was portrayed as the norm, which it is certainly is not. I LOVED the show though and their trials and tribulations were far more realistic. Women are people, just like man, and they should be free to choose the lifestyle that makes them happy.

I just had a conversation with a guy about this (Dear, you must have read my mind) but my 'male' friend thought Samantha was a very unhappy woman due to her lifestyle and I thought that she was the most liberated and carefree of all of them.

I agree with bjf......she made it seem like sex was as simple as kissing...she was always a bit much for me, she was my least favorite on the show

She was a horrible influence on young girls. Young girls watched her and saw that it was okay to have random sex. While I believe men and women should be equal and not have to worry about double standards, why would we want to take on a BAD trait of men? Dating many people is good, sleeping with that many people is horrible. It takes away how special sex is when you can't remember everyone you have been with.
