Dear Poll: Do You Ask Your Friends For Favors?

It's inevitable that we sometimes have to ask our friends for favors, whether it's help with a move, a ride to the airport, a place to crash, or a recommendation for a job. Some people demand huge favors of their friends, while others hate asking for even the tiniest smidgen of help. Where do you fall on the favor spectrum?

It depends on the friend. If I know a friend isn't that close to me or hates being asked to do stuff, then I won't ask unless I really have to. But with a few of my friends, we ask each other for help with anything--a ride somewhere, pet sit, etc. The only favors I try to ask are the ones I really need like, coming to help me with a flat tire! I don't enjoy needing to borrow money or lend it out, but if it's for dinner or a few drinks I won't say no.

Rarely. I have to be really desperate

I don't mind asking small favors if I'm in a bind. Nothing like "Hey, can you donate a kidney?" but more like "Hey, I'm going to be out all day, do you mind stopping by the house and letting my dog out?"

I see friendship as "not asking favors". I see it as a relationship that when they need help, I help them and if I need help, I do not need to ask them or if I have to ask them they don't view it as "something to be repaid". If you do everything like a record of "credit-debit" with your friends and family and relatives, the joy of giving dissipates and become null. I come from a culture that "we do not exist to take up space on this earth but to give to and help others".

Erm, the most I'd ask her for is a dollar for the soda machine. We're used to sharing everything.

My friends are my roommates so I have to ask them for favors all the time. We do everything for each other. It's not a big deal. I do try not to ask too much or ask people I know will forget.

i HATE asking favours from anyone...i absolutely cannot stand it. i dunno if it has to do with being independent and all. not that my friends wouldnt gladly help me out, as i do for them, but i still hate it. :)

I think at this point my friends have shown me that I'd only be scorned if I ask, so yeah, I keep absolutely mum. I am, however, how shocked as to how everyone hates to "bother" people. I think it's a self-destructive behavior, although you're trying to be selfless. It starts to make you think that you're not even worth the trouble, why ask? That's part of the behavior that got me put in therapy by my parents, and I think a lot of people don't realize how horrid it can be for the self-esteem.

I'm with all of you - only desperate times call for desperate measures. I hate to burden anyone with anything! But I don't mind helping out my friends when they need me.

I'm with you guys - I'd rather inconvenience myself than anyone else. Although I am the first to volunteer if friends/family need a hand.

I don't ask anyone for favors unless I am out of options. Even for simple things.

I don't like to inconvenience anyone (even if they are my friends), so I try to keep my favors to a minimum.
