Dear Poll: Do You Find Others’ Happiness Contagious or Grating?

There’s a reason why “misery loves company” seems to be such a true cliché — for some people, being around happy people when they feel sad is a lot like having someone laugh directly in their face. But learning how to derive happiness from other’s good moods is a great ability, and one I’m still working on! Do you find happiness in others contagious or just irritating?

agreed with mesayme. if i resent that person, i would get annoyed by 'oh my bf is so nice and sweet and WHO GIVES A F***!!'

Sometimes it makes me incredibly happy to see other happy and it makes me feel like I'm being petty for being sad or upset or angry. But other people can be just plain annoying to be around when they are giddy and you're not

I had to say "Other" only because it depends on what they're happy ABOUT. For instance. Last week a girl I know got married, and was very happy about it. However, she was the "Other woman" and he divorced his wife for her. She has two YOUNG kids as does he. Sorry, was NOT happy for them and that happiness was NOT contagious because to me that is the most HEINOUS of sins.

i'm way too much of a pleaser to get caught up in my own bad mood. if someone around me is super psyched i adapt immediately as not to be a downer. i guess i've been that way my whole life lol.

Depends on who's happy AND what they're happy about. ITA with those who say there are too many variables.

It always perks up my mood. I'm happy to see others happy, especially if it's someone I care about.

im so positive it think it annoys ppl. i always try to stay happy. and believe me i know more than anyone that its sometimes impossible. but being depressed isnt gonna make it better, only make it worse. i've worked hard on becoming like this, and i like myself like this better :) but thats not to say ppl who r all sunshiny 24/7 rnt annoying sometimes :P

My boyfriend is the perpetual optimist, always positive, never easily-irritated, etc. For the most part, I looove this about him and it absolutely rubs off on me. Every once in a while though I'll be in a sour mood and his natural inclination will be to say "Hey, it's not so bad!" which only infuriates me more because it will seem like he's trivializing my problems. What it comes down to is a fundamental difference between men and women. Typically when women are upset they seek sympathy and understanding. Men, on the other hand, want advice. So naturally it follows that I would feel like my bf was being insensitive when he's really just trying to help me. Figuring this out really smoothed out a few bumps in our relationship :)

i'm typically a happy and positive person but i have to say that if i'm in a foul mood - and you're happy - STAY FAR FAR AWAY - cause i won't be nice about it.

it really does feel like they're laughing in your face. I know when im cranky or upset about something...seeing someone who seems to have it all together drives me nuts i mean come least fake being miserable for my benefit! lol

It totally depends on so many different variables. I couldn't vote.

If I like them or they're strangers I'm happy with them; if I don't like them...hurl time.

Yes, I admit that the "misery loves company" cliché is totally true for me. But it only works for meaningless stuff. When something really good happens to my friends I am happy too! But when I'm in a bad mood and someone is all giddy from practicly nothing, it just annoys me.. :$

I picked option two, but I'm actually being totally hypocritcal because I'm incredibly happy right now and worried someone's going to feel that way about my mood.
