Dear Poll: Do You Prefer a Man or Woman Gyno?

Visiting the gyno is never fun, but liking your doctor can make it a whole lot less painful. Some women feel that having a female doctor is the only way to go: they know about the woman's body first hand, they can sympathize with everything you're experiencing, and they are easier to talk to, but other women are more old fashioned and feel a male physician is more trustworthy, so ladies, tell me which sex do you prefer? Do you like going to a male or female gynecologist?

Given that there are now sufficient female gynos, I simply see no reason for choosing to let a man view me naked and to stick his fingers in places I only allow my husband. I think those women who have stated they find men more gentle or kind to them when being touched down there, that they find them nicer to them, that they understand them better than women are really expressing a sexual preference. They want to be touched and treated by another male. They like the company and the attention of an alpha male. If it is a free country and if this is your preference then so be it. But I do not allow men, other than the man I love, to see me naked and to grope me down in the private parts. I don't care if he is Mr Wonderful and has the best "bedside" charm. I don't want to be touched in such intimate ways by any other man other than my hubbie. I only ask of my female gynos that she be competent and get the job done. I don't need to go to doctors to have my hand held, not to mention other parts of me. I just want the physical care needed. No more. The way some of you speak about your doctors makes me think you are choosing a a mate, a best friend, a partner not a doctor. Someone above asked do I really think that men who choose to spend their professional lives with women, often naked women are perverts? Yes, I do. There is no need for men to be looking at naked women or touching their breasts or private parts. There is no need for women to be allowing men to do this now that there are so many female physicians available. The men who choose this profession and the women who prefer stripping and being touched by male gynos are both engaging in a moral and sexually freighted situation. Again, each of us is free to do with our bodies as we wish. But please let's not pretend that those of us who choose to strip and be touched by men, educated or otherwise, are not getting something out of this experience that goes simply beyond mere medical practices and let us please not pretend that guys who choose to watch naked women all day and who are given permission to touch naked women all day are simply choosing one medical specialty and that this choice has nothing to do with sexual desire. Especially please do not try to tell us that male doctors are not like other men and that they don't really get off on seeing and touching naked women.

I find myself frantically searching the web for posts like this. I feel like I need to defend the GOOD male gynos. I use a male and he is excellent!!! He is very kind, gentle, and sympathetic. I wish people would be a little more open minded when generalizing male OB/GYN's. During my first visit, the doctor actually took to me from the exam room to his office so I would not think he was going to "run at me with a speculum" and explained what was going to occur during the exam. I was nervous about seeing a male doctor, as I am a virgin unfamiliar with that type of closeness, however, he made me feel completely at ease. I really don't think the sex of the doctor is relevant, it's all about personality. I mean, there are lesbian gynos, that's the same, if not worse, than having a straight male! At least male doctors are required to have a female witness in the room during the exam.

You can't seriously think that just because a man decides to go into OB/GYN that he is a pervert?! What must you think of proctologists, or even pediatricians?! With that type of logic pediatricians must be pedophiles.

I don't think any man other than my husband should handle my private parts. I really don't understand why some women feel comfortable with anther man touching them in their private parts. Why when we tell cops and guards, for example, to not touch us in our private parts should we allow a doc to touch us and even more intimately than the above two? Do we really have so much faith in the power of a few years of university to overcome the male's sexual interest in women? I cannot imagine why any guy chooses to spend his life with his hands up women's private parts other than he gets some kind of perverted kick out of this sort of work. I also wonder at the motivation of those women who like male doctors doing this sort of thing to them. Anyway, for me it is a female doctor. I am not sharing my private parts with any strange men.

Always, always, always a female. Male cops or security guards are not allowed to touch my private parts so why should a male doctor or nurse? I don't buy for one minute that a few years of university makes a man less a man. The only reason I can think of as to why a guy would choose to be an ob/gyn is that he gets some kind of jollies out of touching women all day. There is no reason at all for any man to have to be the one giving such private, intimate tests. There are enough qualified female doctors and even nurses to give these examinations. This being the case I have to assume the women who want men to do it like being touched by guys and do it because it is a kind of turn on. I see where lots of women talk about how gentle, kind, caring is the guy who is fingering them. Should this kind of language be preserved for our husbands and not some strange male? My husband is gentle, kind, compassionate and only him will ever touch me in those private areas. I would feel like I betrayed him if I let some guy grope me down there, especially since there are more than enough women trained to do the job.

I prefer an older, personable, confident male doctor for both my general medical and ob/gyn care and my fiance values the same qualities in his lady doc. I just believe that in general a member of the opposite sex will try harder to win you over, be more sensitive in his or her appraoch. My fiance recently indicated that he'd learned more about his body from his lady doc than from all of the males in his past put together; there are no homophobic issues with either party as she's female / he's male and she actually takes time to explain the "what" and the "why" of all exam procedures, even when doing the "down there" bit (which conveys a high degree of comfort and confidence on her part I must say).

I likes the male doctor~ I think women in general are more emotionally unstable and judgmental. So, I have a male gyno. He always treats me, my body and my concerns with respect. He's someone I can trust. Plus, he is so gentle and he has very warm hands! :] I feel very cozy having him examine/palpate my girly parts!

I used to go to a female doctor but it seems like she was getting kind of arrogant and snotty. She even told me I should trim. Now I go to a male gyno and he seems more nervous then I am, but he is a very nice guy.

Female for sure! She has what I have and probably understands most of the things we're talking about. So I feel better talking to a female rather than a male who doesnt know what it FEELS like.

Very interesting comments here...I have to say ultimately its who makes you more comfortable when youre naked and vulnerable...and who would be a better listener and provider of information or assistance. Being male or female has nothing to do with it and yes, I agree some doctors are judgmental...THEY ARE OUT THERE, FOLKS! Whether or not, male doctors are "smarter" than female doctors is another story...I always found that a female gyno might relate and adhere to the situation offering the best advise, since shes probably experienced it at some point... I have to say I really agree with Rugelachs statement though. Just my personal opinion of course.

Just like everything else, there are good ones and bad ones on both sides. It has nothing to do with gender, it's just certain personalities. I've been seen by both male and female gynos and luckily they were all great. I never had a bad experience with a gyno. *knock on wood*

I have had both and in my experience the male was alot more delicate with my lady parts.

I can't believe all of these stories about your doctors saying things to you about your breasts and legs and sexual activity! I honestly would not know what to say in that situation except "Stop what you are doing - I am leaving." I guess I'm just shocked that doctors are allowed to act that way in a sensitive environment like a gyno visit. I hope you all reported these comments to the managing doctor, I would hate to think that that sort of behavior would continue unchecked.

the same ob-gyn that delivered me is now my (ob)gyno. he has a great reputation and has seen many women. my box isn't anything special compared to all the other patients he's had. he has a great bedside manner and is totally respectful. Unfortunately his arm was broken when it was time to deliver, so a female ob-gyn delivered savannah and was completely rude and disrestpectful. NOT something you want when delivering your first child or any for that matter. but i've also had great female doctors. either way, it depends on the person. there are very qualified professionals and questionable "professionals" regardless of gender. ok, thats the end of my rant.

I work at an OBGYN office and all of our physicans are wonderful doctors... My male docs are great men with charcter and are not perverts like some people might believe. I would choose my gyno based on their experience and credentials, not by what sex they are.

I used to have a female gyno that I LOVED!! One of the top gyno's in the US. My last pregnancy, I found out my son had a severe heart problem so I had to switch gyno's. I was sitched to a group practice and I was not liking the idea. My first visit, I saw a young (hot with blue eyes) male gyno. I felt very akward at first but i LOVED him!! He requested to see me every week. He was very professional and very caring. My son passed two days after birth. When I went in for my post partume checkup, he took me in his office and sat there and chatted with me for a while. My husband(boyfriend at the time) really liked him as well ( he didn't like the idea of me having a male gyno ) Needless to say, I'll be visiting him next month for my yearly exam. It would be either or for me!

My first gyno appt was with a man, and it was horrible. I was petrified with fear, and he did nothing to alleviate it. He was very clinical and cold. When it was all over, I was bleeding a little bit (I'd never had so much as a tampon in there before!) and he didn't say anything, didn't tell me it was normal, just handed me a box of tissues and walked out. When I got out to the car, I started crying, looked at my mom, and said, "I NEVER want to do that again, even if it means never having sex." My second gyno was a female, and the warmest, sweetest doctor I've ever had. I felt a lot more comfortable asking her questions because of her sex.

I honestly don't know why they are are male gynos. They don't really know what is going on down there other than what they read in books and what women tell them. I rather have a female who I can relate to on a female level.

I had a male OBGyn when I was pregnant with my son and he was great. I have no problems seeing either a male or female. I've had good experiences with both.

Female gyno for me only because I feel more comfortable with them for this particular side of medicine. Male gynos are great too but not for me. By the way, some doctors have horrible bedside manner or are just plain rude in general. It has nothing to do with the physician's gender!

I'm very particular about which men go certain places on my body. I have a female gyno, and I'd really like to keep it that way. Not that I don't trust male ones. Just a matter of personal comfort.

I have a male gyno. He is wonderful! I wish he practiced more types of medicine, cause I'd see him for everything if I could. Ha ha! I don't believe him to be a pervert, and I can't believe others would accuse male gynos of being such. I don't think perverts go through goodness knows how many years of school just to be gynos. I wouldn't trade him for any female doctor, at least any I've had before. He was on vacation for about 2 weeks during the end of my last pregnancy and I had to see another doctor in his group who happened to be female. She was awful. She was rude, unsympathetic and spent less than 5 minutes with me both times. My male gyno on the other hand, was very sympathetic and more gentle than she was. He even helped me sit up at the end of every 'visit', while the female gyno didn't even offer help at all. All this to say, my male gyno is an angel! He's the best!
