Dear Poll: Are you Afraid of Change?

Change is a very unsettling feeling for some. While it can feel save to be a creature of habit, you can't grow or learn when you stay dormant and don't push yourself to take risks. The fear of the unknown can be quite daunting, but inevitable. I am a big advocate of change, although I would be lying if I said it didn't terrify me, so what I want to know is, how do you feel about change?

I usually hate it while it's happening, then I absolutely love the outcome of it! For example~ it was PAINFUL getting a new job and learning the ropes, but I love my job now. And it was horrible trying to find a new car for myself (old on was totalled), but I've found something and now I love it. That's what I mean by that. Now some change is good all around~ like getting into a relationship..that kinda change is good and always exciting =D

Hey candy apple! We are quite similar I find! I also have moved around to different countries - changed constantly my work, style, surrounding, friends... everything. The only difference with you is that I am already 34! But I needed change very badly and very often. I got bored of being bored and was also anxious about my future (it does never look good on a CV when you change your work every 3-6 months). But finally I accepted this side of my personality. It also helped that I found what I always wanted to do in my life - namely painting - and that all the other jobs just weren't challenging enough! You see, if you do something creative for a living, than you change your life everyday - you do not need to change things around you anymore, because you create new things! I still get bored easily and still have to travel at least every 2-3 months to keep me from suffocating, but I am much more constant in the main things in life!

I always get scared/nervous about change at first but once the change is made and it's not unknown anymore I'm fine/adaptable.

I'm in the middle. While change is good, it can also be scary.

In general, I hate change. Whenever I change countries, change where I'm living, etc, I absolutely hate it at first because I like having a set routine. But once I've established a new routine (normally after a fortnight, sometimes longer) I'm fine and start enjoying my new surroundings.

Even change for the positive scares me. I sit around and bemoan the situation. I have a sense of adventure inside me, but it's trapped inside the rest of me, help!

According to my mother I'm a weather-vane: I move wherever the wind blows me! I was born in one country, grew up in another, moved to a third, speak three languages like my own, fluent in two others. I've done every job imaginable from tanning salon receptionist, to librarian, to (now) construction worker. I've gone from chubby to extremely skinny to overweight. I've changed my major from econ, to literature, to languages, to undecided.. Two years ago I moved from Europe to North America. Four months ago I moved from East Coast to West Coast. Next month my boyfriend will join me and we are looking for a new place to move in together. The best part is I'm not twenty yet! The worst part is I've changed so much I don't really know who the hell I am anymore. And I get bored very easily. I'm scared I'll never be able to settled down with anyone/anywhere.. :(

See I get bored a lot, so change is a necessity for me. However, I still have THE worst anxiety and stress when it comes to anything changing, whether it has to do with money, living situations, etc.

I completely agree. Change is so necessary for growth and development. I think deep down inside I crave change, so I plan for change or welcome it when it comes my way, but I am also petrified of it. It is one of those things that you anxiously worry about but when it is done, it feels so good! I think it is healthy to be afraid of change because it means that you value stability in a way. But it is important that we realize we have to challenge ourselves and continue to learn and experience new things. There is always an adventure/great new beginning/pleasant surprise around the corner! Change has the potential to be quite amazing!

Change is a test of our adaptability. I prefer Change to stagnating -- I want to grow, learn, experience, see, do, feel, taste... and if Change of environment or circumstances is a necessary part of those things then I'm all for change.

thank you, Pop! I was about to say something. How ironic this comes the day before my life is about to make SEVERAL drastic changes! I leave my old job tomorrow, then I'm driving to pick up my new puppy (I haven't met yet) that has been living w/ my parents, and when I come back, I have to finish moving into my new apartment (which is now right down the street from my boyfriend's) and I am starting a new job on Monday! PHEW! I am ready for all these good changes and I'm glad I have an idea of where I am going, but at the same time, it's incredibly stressful - especially to do this ALL in one weekend!

Both. Change is healthy, but scary for me.

Afraid, not Affraid! Eeek! Sorry, the grammar/spelling policewoman in me sometimes can handle stuff on this blog and sometimes can't. This one put me over the edge apparently. Anyway, I have moved around a lot and I love the experience of getting to know a new town, new people etc. But I need some stability in my life always, like family, friends etc, otherwise it would get too overwhelming!

I like the excitement change brings, but hate the anxiety that comes along with it. It also depends on what type of change it is...
