Decreasing Teen Pregnancy Through Masturbation? Genius!

Here's a post from OnSugar blog The Last Normal Girl On Earth.

Although I've never seen the show The Secret Life of An American Teenager, apparently the lead character decides it is safer to have sex with yourself than with a teenage boy. I must watch this episode — this is an idea I have been preaching for FOREVER! Young women need to be introduced to solo love way earlier, don't you think? Not only will it decrease potential teenage pregnancies, it will empower these young girls to become sexually aware women. Good idea or too risque to broadcast to a young television audience?

This is so retarded... no, not the teenage masturbation! LOL. But the idea that one thing should replace the other. Here's an idea, how about not being an asshole about teenagers having sex lives and access to birth control ? How does that sound ?

I agree with runningesq that there's a lot more emotional reasons girls have sex but WOOO masturbation all the way man! I mean yeah sex is great and you feel closer to your man and all but who on earth is ever going to know how to please me better than me? I will admit that this probably did allow me to hold out losing my virginity until 19 but, even if you're in a relationship and have sex all the time, "diddling your skittle" (love that phrase now, greenfairy) is always good. but yeah I think comprehensive sex education and being comfortable with your body will definitely be a huge leap towards reducing unplanned pregnancies

I watch Secret Life... I have no idea how I got pulled into it, the scripts are terrible LOL The character who discusses the masturbation topic is the "good Christian girl." She had sex with her boyfriend once and doesn't want to do it again until marriage. Her Mother encourages her to try self pleasuring and she does. It's weird though because both the mother and her brother know what's going on. I'm all for keeping an open communication with your Mom, but the brother knowing is weird. She lit candles, sprinkled rose petals on her bed, and turned on She Bop (Cyndi Lauper - song about the deed)... I was laughing out loud. I think teaching girls to try masturbation instead of having sex might help a bit, but as others have said, teen pregnancy is usually the result of sex from peer pressure. I think teaching women to not be ashamed of their bodies is a wonderful thing. Teens have raging hormones and helping relieve some of the tension may help at least bring the rate down. I think banning Abstinence only teachings would help the rate.

I don't know how much masturbating keeps/can or could keep people from having sex, since they aren't the same thing. They're related, of course, but I don't think that there's a legitimate comparison between one and another. However, I'm so happy with pleasing myself and I still haven't feel the need of having someone do it for me, so maybe there's something to be said about it.

Great idea - take away the stigma and many young girls will realize how much more enjoyable sex is with themselves then an inexperienced teenage boy.

I don't think teen girls having sex is all about pleasure. So I really don't think this will decrease teen pregnancies. Nice idea in theory though.

This is the exact idea that Oprah's specialist promotes as well! They had an entire episode on it.

I'm all for it.

These girls will learn that the guy isn't the only one to give them orgasms. Therefore, with this information they will have more power over their sexuality. I'm all for it! AZ is one of the states with the highest rate of teen pregnancy, it would be nice to see that change.

If I ever have daughters, I'm buying them vibrators as soon as they turn 15. I want them to feel comfortable discussing sex with me, and I want them to get to know solo sex before they confuse sexual feelings with "love". I'm not sure if it will discourage teens from sex though, I don't think anything will do that. But it might make them more likely to be safe and "mature" about it.

Oh, Studio... how much you have to learn.

I'm a teenage girl and I think masturbation is disgusting. Sorry. Although I'm not having sex, either, so that could have something to do with it.

I think a lot of teenager girls have sex for reasons other than pure pleasure... pressure from friends, pressure from b/f, feeling like they "should" etc.

The problem is that there is this big taboo about women and masturbation.

Lol, I don't think that would work. I was diddlin' my skittle WAY before most girls figured it out, but I don't think it would stop most girls from being stupid. For me, it made me more aware of my body and drove a lot of curiosity that lead to an educated understanding of my bits. But, then again, I'm not a moron and value knowledge. What I think IS pretty weird is how a girl would probably have sex at 13 or 14 before even talking about masturbation. Now THAT is gross. Let's work on changing that. Society, you're a loser.
