Did This Ad Do Anything to Cement Obama as a "Celebrity?"

Did This Ad Do Anything to Cement Obama as a "Celebrity?"

A representative for Britney Spears may have been speaking for the world when he gave his reaction to the McCain ad featuring Brit for a split-second saying, "Why would we want to get Britney Spears involved in presidential politics?" Wise words perhaps.

Featuring shots of Paris Hilton as well as Britney, the ad is generating a meta-buzz — not about the message really, but the ad itself. To me the most interesting thing to come out of the ad is not the comparison, but that the Hiltons have given $4,600 to McCain, and they're testy about the ad — and perhaps the choice of celebs: haven't Britney and Paris been celebs for longer than Barack? Maybe they should have picked someone from High School Musical?

What do you think of the piece? Is the message lost in the delivery?

This ad just demonstrates how desperate McCain is. It does nothing negative for Obama, because it is just so dumb. It helps Hilton, though. She made a decent response.

I am fascinated at what I read sometimes. Simultaneously, critics have tried to portray him as both a celebrity (perhaps inferring a complete lack of substance, a political equivalent of a fruit tart) and yet an elitist intellectual - something surely NOT akin to the "vapid popstar" comparison this ad attempted to conjure up in the viewer. So..let me get this right.....He is being accused of being, simultaneously, very highly educated, intelligent, a popular guy, well-liked, able to inspire people, and able to make people feel hope instead of manipulating them with fearmongering. Oh indeed, those are absolutely AWFUL qualities for a leader to have. Positively rubbish, I can see where they were coming from. .P As for inexperience - last time I checked, experience was not, by default, indicative of wisdom. The current president is proving that quite handily without further effort on our behalf.

"i get the impression that he doesn't care to what happens to our troops in the middle east" Or what happens to them after they manage to come back alive, considering his stance on the GI Bill...

Why would a POW not care what happened to the troops?

This early, i really can't tell which i would side with, but i am leaning towards obama. Furthermore, the GOP base is not even warming up to mccain (of course, i could be wrong) and even though it's still early in the game, this just proves to show how we see our candidates to-date. i know i will get burned for this, but i think mccain is a warmonger. i get the impression that he doesn't care to what happens to our troops in the middle east and the other parts of the world. Can’t we just all get along? i think it is time for a purification; i think it is time for a change; i think it is time for obama time. Now that the candidates are set for the US Presidential Election, Barack Obama and John McCain are beginning to set the tone for their campaign. and i just want to share this video that i saw earlier in pollclash that the two presidential candidates talked about their plans on the huge taxes that we are paying and so far i like the plan of Obama than McCain has..but just try to check the video first

"It wasn't your darling that drew these people. I only wish our slanted media would report it." My friend who lives in Berlin and went to the speech has a VERY different account.

Having seen Ockoberfest, I'd be willing to bet that Germans will show up for just about anything if you offer free beer.

That's funny that you came to that conclusion then. You think 200,000 germans showed up for free booze? I don't know where you get your info, but let's agree to disagree.

And yes, I saw it. Know thine enemy.

Gitsie, that is an awful big assumption to make. "People wanted to." I've been to several big concerts where the mayor of the particular city or a local politician of some sort would get up and speak in the middle. I didn't go to see them.
gitsie123 gitsie123 9 years
Did you even watch the speech, GS?
gitsie123 gitsie123 9 years
BFD, when the speech was. No one coerced or forced them to go. People wanted to. That's the point.
Great-Sommelier Great-Sommelier 9 years
The speech was in the middle Gitsie. Look up the info.

but the most important thing is that they stayed for the speech, which was pretty amazing. Or did they lock the gates and force all those germans to chant Obama and stay for the whole thing.
UnDave35 UnDave35 9 years
Yeah, they passed those out at the entrance, and out it on there...

GS I think the majority of people who came that speech were either wearing Obama tshirts or holding up signs. That is a lot of effort to put forth for free food a beer.

UnDave, I think it's more than that just couldn't prove anything; he wasn't even indicted on any charges.
