Dish! What Makes Someone Funny?

Some people have a dry sense of humor, some are animated and loud. I can't really say I have a type, but like art, I know it when I see it. And you can see from my IM exchange with a friend up there about a mutual acquaintance, I don't like when you can tell someone's trying hard to be funny. What qualities make someone funny to you? (And don't mind those catty cats up there! They're always like that.)

My sense of what's funny changes over time -- like, have many tequila shots have I had? After 3, everything is high-larious! Okay, seriously, I like observational humor that's not too mean-spirited. Not politcally correct either. Searingly truthful observations with impeccable timing gets me going every time.

Trying to be funny all the time is painful to watch. Also painful, when someone makes a dumb joke and then looks at you expectantly, intoning that if you get their joke, then you'll laugh. You got the joke but the reaction you are suppressing is groaning and rolling your eyes. Then there's the mean comment that's disguised as a sarcastic joke by just adding a laugh at the end...

I think funny people are those that are just born into a comical family. They say things that seem normal to them and everyone else gets a kick out of it.

If you are a fan of Seinfeld, it says a lot about your humor.

Some people can be too sarcastic, and almost rude, at times. I knew someone who felt the need to make a sarcastic comment about everything! Watching movies with her was torture, because she would have to make fun of every action in the movie in a sarcastic fashion. I think that can be like trying too hard to be funny, too.

i'm with Chrstne. I love sarcasm and will always incorporate it into my life. I do not like ostentatious behavior in any method and humor, especially, can get very old very fast.

People who know they are funny don't have to tell other people they are funny

People who put on a show are irritating. I never actually try to be funny, I'm just dry and sarcastic, and if someone thinks it's funny, great. However, sarcasm can also take some aback, especially if they feel what you are saying is being said in a malicious way, which is never how I intend my sarcasm. I mean, sarcasm IS the lowest form of humor, but I enjoy it, and I enjoy when other people partake. I just cannot be a "class clown" or the person who does things to make other people laugh all the time. The best humor is the kind that's an accident, the kind of thing you say, look back on and then laugh because it was hysterical. When I was younger, a high school boyfriend of mine was being an ass. I said something along the lines of "Why don't you put a condom on your head, because if you're gonna act like a d*ck, you might as well dress like one too.." I didn't think what I was saying was funny...nor was it sarcastic either, it was just something that flew out of my mouth that got laughs. I like it better that way.

I've definitely met someone like that (always putting on a show) and it does get old... the two of you talking about her is a little snarky though. :\

Sarcasm in stride can be funny but over doing it and being on the borderline of just tacky and rude with dry sarcastic behavior just annoys me.

Pretty much what Chrstne said.

I'm shamelessly sarcastic. People who don't get sarcasm really irritate me. I love people who have the ability to be like that, it's much better than the "knock-knock, who's there" type.

we kinda discussed this awhile back when Dear asked, do you like funny guys the number one thing for me is someone who can make wry observations...sarcastic and sometimes mean comments about hilarious stuff going on around us makes me's not necessarily about telling jokes or trying to be funny a dry sense of humor, sarcasm, and the ability to observe what is going on around them is funniest to me
