Do Tell: What Makes a House a Home?

Home sweet home — there's nothing like it! Whether it's the smell, your own bed, or your dog welcoming you at the front door, there's just something comforting about being around the things you love. My parents' house will always feel like home because it's full of warmth, love and a little bit of chaos, but ladies, do tell, what makes a house a home for you?

I think people make a place a home, 'cause if your house is only the place where you keep your things, eat and sleep, is not really a home, you have to feel loved and live with loving people and if you love alone at least have memories of people you love and who love (loved) having a good time and beeing happy in your house. Memories of the good times, that feeling you get when you are in trouble and all you want is to be home safe and curled up in bed, that pertual wish to redecorate and get a bigger bathroom or more closet space or whatever you feel would make that place your own, how when you see someones new house filled with expensive high tech stuff and classy furniture and you know that no matter how much you would love to have all those things you wouldn't trade your little hole in the wall appartment for it, that's what makes a house a home all those things

That warm, cozy, feeling you get when you walk into your home. It' like a refuge from everything else. A place where you feel safe and loved.

My husband, my kitties, my bed, all the "me" touches that are everywhere. I agree too that my parents' house will always be "home" too.

My blankets and a pet or two. For some reason animals it's just not home without a cat or dog. I'm currently without a pet- but I'm going to the animal shelter tomorrow, so wish me luck!

Home is where you can chill on your couch with the tv on/a book in hand, a nice cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and relax... when you feel cozy and safe that is home. :)

I agree that it's all about the people in it. My fiance and I are in our third place together in 6 years, and they all felt like home.

The people in it. I can be just about anywhere and if I'm with my husband and kids and we're comfortable, I'm home.

For me just being in the same place for longer than a year makes it feel like home to me. I moved around a lot when I was a kid, so I never really felt grounded or at peace anywhere. Also, just being able to walk in the front door and feeling the warmth from the heater (in the winter) and the smell it has makes me comfortable.

We are just starting to get settled into our new house. It's now starting to feel cozy. We changed the color of the walls and are slowly adding things here and there that we carefully picked and just the change on the walls made a HUGE difference. But it feels like home to me most when it's nice and warm in the house, something is cooking on the stove, candles are lit throughout and everyone is home.

There are tons of little things that make a house a home, like the way it smells, the dishes you use, the couch everything to me makes a house a home... and when its lived in.. not dirty but lived in... you know a couple dishes in the sink.. bed not always made.. thats when i feel like im at home.. i know its sounds strange, but those little things.. show that people live there.. and animals! animals make a house feel like home as well! :)
