Does His Car Affect How You Feel About Him?

Who doesn't love a nice car? I'll be the first one to admit that I do, but did you know that your car actually says a lot about you? Wesley Brown, partner in Iceology, was quoted saying "This new generation of consumers looks at a vehicle as a piece of clothing" and in today's society where there's so much emphasis on appearance, his statement makes perfect sense.

Since there's no denying that looks matter when it comes to dating, let me take it to another level and ask you if the car he drives plays a part, too. I mean, would Jake Ryan have been as hot if he was driving a mini van instead of a red Porsche? Ladies, putting all modesty aside, tell me, does a guy with a nice car affect the way you feel about him?

I couldn't care less about a guy's car, unless he's driving something like a hummer -- then I'd probably think him a complete ass and be done with it.

I actually get turned OFF by expensive cars...I dislike people that measure their self-worth with money! It doesn't matter how many thousands your car or jewellry is worth if you're still the same bland morron! :p

As long as it's not something over-compensatingly flashy.

I definitely think the car a guy drives says a lot about him. It might not necessarily affect how I feel about him, but at first, it will definitely tell me a little about who he is. It is just like clothes.. what you wear tells people about what kind of person you *probably* are and I think that it is the same way with a car. If a guy has a loud, flashy sports car, I am going to think he probably wouldn't be my type because I am not that kind of person! But for a girl who is, she might be interested in that. So yes, I do think so.

I LOVE the practicality of my boyfriend's '07 Civic. I always thought I'd buy myself a luxury car at some point, but after driving his car I love that it is environmentally friendly, afforadable and dependable. After driving his car, I would be hard-pressed to spend a ton on a BMW or Benz. I would be REALLY turned off by a Hummer or an unsafe car, or something super flashy, but other than that I'm not too picky! :)

I wouldn't rule someone out based on their vehicle, but someone driving something like a Viper or a huge truck would have a *lot* more work ahead of them than someone driving say, an old karmann Ghia.

yes it ABSOLUTELY matters. It shows you are dedicated and grounded.. if you are driving a 1982 toyota.. that shows you're not driven and don't care about your appearance. A 2004 Infiniti.. shows you care about your appearance and want to make an impression

my boyfriend drives a luxury sports car now. it's nicer than his previous cars but it doesn't change how i feel about him. the good part about having a nicer car is the speed, interior, exterior and the service when he gets an oil change.

I'm not impressed by a car, so no; it doesn't come into play with me. But I had such an eye opener about how other women are on that front when I had a boyfriend who was still in school and drove a beat up car. He came to pick me up after a softball practice - this unbelievably tall, dark, handsome guy who was going for his PhD - and all those girls saw was his old car and were making fun of it. I was astounded.

you know there is a thin line between passion and obsession for cars, especially in men i don't care what car he drives, as long as he is a GREAT driver;)

javsmav -- I totally agree with you. I would NEVER be interested in someone with a Hummer (even as a friend).

Responsibility matters. If he had no car near where I am (DC metro-accessible area), that would be fine. If I was still in the area where I grew up (no busses, no subway systems), I wouldn't care so long as he was mobile and could get around as he needed.

Yeah, I know if a guy is driving an expensive car, he's probably an asshole. I'm not that materialistic, and I expect my man to be the same.

i dont care what kind of car he drives but if its all messy inside, like crumbs and misc. papers all scattered in the seat, THAT turns me off i don't like flashy sports cars makes me just want to slap the guy for some reason

It matters to me, but in a way that is different from most. I am totally not at all materialistic, and would rather save money for the future or spend it on vacation and long trips, things like that. I'd rather see a man driving a sensible car rather than blowing a ton of money on a BMW or a Lexus. My fiance really wants to get a Lexus as a gift to himself when he finishes residency, and I am dead set against it. I don't see why anyone could possibly need a $60,000+ car period, and especially when we should be saving for having children someday in the future (or when we could be using the money to take that trip to Tahiti that I wanted, but he said we couldn't afford!).

I mean... having a nice car certainly does not hurt! :)

Heck yes it matters!! My last bf went from having a 66 mustang when I first met him, to a broke-down, beat-up 1980 EL CAMINO. I can't even look at one now without being disgusted. My boyfriend now has a pretty nice truck, but I am the one with the beautiful sportscar :)

I dated a guy briefly who drove an absolutely beat up, army green, puttering, smoking, stalling 1960-something Dodge Dart. I don't put much thought into what kind of cars guys drive. It doesn't matter much to me. But, that Dart was too much for me. I was absolutely embarrassed to drive in it. He didn't even have the income potential to upgrade his car, even slightly. So, I dumped him. Though the car became a small factor, I eventually just had to end it because of his lack of any and all ambition in life. For anything. I'm very ambitious, so I just couldn't understand it. But, Jesus, that card was bad.

I could really care less :P When I met my boyfriend he had a pretty nice car but then crashed it and it was at the mechanics for about 7 months. So he had to buy a beater AND that got stolen! So he bought another beater and then finalyl got his accord back (and yes I rolled with him the WHOLE time in the beater) and he just recently treated himself to a Lincoln and man I love it! Espcially when I am allowed to drive it to work. But no matter what he drives, I will always love him ;)

Verily, I hear you about the Hummer! I ABHOR those oversized vehicles, and it's like waving a red flag in front of a bull every time I see one. Other than that, as long as his car isn't an outrageous gas-guzzler, it really makes no difference to me what kind it is.

Its funny you posted this cause it was a story line on One Tee Hill last night lol she talked crap about his car and he called her on being shallow! Sophia Bush forever!!!
emalove emalove 9 years
No, it really doesn't influence how I feel about the person...that seems very shallow to me. I've dated guys who have drove all sorts of cars, nice AND crappy...from an early 80s Jeep Wrangler to a brand new Jaguar. My husband has a few different cars, some are even antique "classic" cars. But in the end, it really means nothing to me. They're just cars.
