Flashback: Pain Will Cure Your Weak Back

This harness corset promises to strengthen your internal organs. If by strengthen they mean decimate, then yes, truth in advertising! That tight-lacing was actually believed to cause severe organ displacement as well as other internal damage. No wonder men stopped wearing them before women.

I should also mention that it's a bad idea to buy a corset just off the rack without having a proper fit from the person who made the corset. If you're gonna buy off the rack don't do it up too tight!

Any poorly fitting corset will cause damage. When buying one it's best to have multiple fittings and a few mock corsets made to ensure a perfect fit. Also you should "train" yourself so that when you lace it up it isn't too tight. Training your body to a corset involves wearing the corset over a long period (several hours) and slowley tightening the lacing every half hour or so. Nothing too extreme, just little by little.

When my mom was little, her father's aunt used to live with them. She grew up in the age of corsets and wore them even when my mom was little (1950s). Eventually, she decided she didn't want to wear them anymore but had the hardest time adjusting to life without them. Apparently my mother and her sisters often had to prop her up on the couch because she had no muscle support in her torso.

Well they were sort an amazing part of fashion for a long time, but that changed as people finally realized they couldn't breath in those things. I can see the lure as they can make your waistline really great and boost up the chest line. I think that ended after around 1890's or so and we got rid of the whole thing by 1910's and 20's.

They probably had weak backs because they didn't have any stomach muscles, which help hold your back up!

I love corsets. The most binding thing I've ever worn was a tight bustier and a couple corsets I made that can only be used for costumes (unfortunately, due to the plastic boning). Right now I'm working on learning to be a corset maker, however, I can't, for the life of me, figure out how the patter fits together when piece A goes next to piece C but the sides that match up are considerably different in length. I love the feeling of being bound and the phenomenal back support so that I can relax my back muscles and still sit up. Granted, I'd never wear a corset long enough to get permanent damage. Though, I'm probably in the minority... my mom accused me of having a bondage fetish when I was about 10.

Well, even though it squeezes the fuck out of your internal organs, I can see where they're going with that back thing. ;)
