I can smell the hypocrisy in this thread and it stinks.

i'm upset but not suprised by what happened in maine. @jayde- straight marriage has never really been that sanctified. sorry, your religious beliefs mean nothing when they hinder my civil rights. keep them to yourself and don't interfere with other people's lives that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. as for anthony sowell, again it's very upsetting that people who committ sexual assaults against women and children spend less time in jail then people who committ non-violent drug offenses. it's disgusting really, and it's how a serial killer was let back onto the streets to terrorize innocent people. i hope they put his murdering ass underneath the jail this time.

I think we need to do away with marriage entirely. Something is a marriage if the two people getting married call it a marriage, as does the person who marrys them. Otherwise, there's another, separate, legal term that grants rights. Marriage itself has absolutely no rights attached to it, and is just a word. Everyone wins! Yaaay!

Pervasive, government-imposed discrimination in the name of a religion that preaches "treating others how you want to be treated" above all else is just mind-blowing to me.

Maine saying no to this doesn't surprise me at all considering Californians said no on gay marriage which I think is a crock of sh*t. Who are we to tell anyone they can or cannot get married. It should be everyone's own personal choice.

As far as the gay marriage thing is concerned: I'm Catholic, but I am pro gay rights. I personally think that if marriage is a "religios term" than only weddings that take place in a church should have the title.. gay or straight. People who get married by a JOP or outside of the church they have some other title "civil union" or what ever... gay or straight That way it isn't an issue of religion or sexual orientation. If you were united in a church its a marriage, outside of the church it's a union, regardless of gay or straight. My fiance's first 'marriage' was to a woman at the JOP. That would then be a civil union, because it was a civil ceremony. Peronsally, the words "marriage" and "civil union" could be "pink" and "brown". I think that if it were the same standards for everyone, that it would make more sense. The fact that two people who love each other can't get the same rights if they are gay as they can when they are straight doesn't make sense at all - that is NOT a religious issue. If a gay couple have a union that lasts 25 years, and one spouse dies - and the other don't get custody of the kids because it was a gay union - that's when you know that something is wrong. I think people get too tied up in the labels and words.

Yoga. I didn't hear that part about the woman running into the store! How awful. I hope that at least some of these women's families can get some closure. It's kinda creepy to think that this guy has been running amuck around here for who knows how long, and even creepier.. he looks sort of familair (of course that's probably just my mind going into overdrive....) Anyways - I hope that this guy wasn't trying to be "infamous" like other serial killers. But guaranteed in a few years, we will start hearing the story come out in the public... books, movies, tv specials... How sad.

Jayde 30 is right. We shall all treat each other with respect. I respect her concern about how God judges her. It is a fear that many have. I also have to argue that this country has a few rules that we're supposed to live by, and one of them is Separate Church From State. And that rule pretty much means that we can't make rules based on religion. That is after all why we created our own country, and left England. Religious Freedom. And with that religious freedom you cannot make rules for a whole country based on a religion, let alone a religion that only some of the population follows. That's the law. Maintaining a definition based on old traditions is also just a way of avoiding change. People and things evolve. The whole reason we have cars, and planes and trains is because someone decided to change things. While new technology and new society definitions of things have to change. Vocabulary from the 1800s would only slightly mean what we mean today. And that's because as a society the language has evolved. Since you cannot make a rule based on religion, you have no right to say that the word marriage cannot be applied to something that you see as "morally wrong." You find it morally wrong because of your religion, and because of that, you cannot make Marriage a term only applied to straight unions.

I can see gay couples not getting married in the Catholic Church but hell, they should be able to get married in a court house. :oy:

Why is the word "marriage" so sacred? Why do some people think that term should be for straight couples only? Jayde you agree that gay couples should have the rights as straight couples but not the same terminology? What is that supposed to mean exactly? Don't be so ridiculous! Any two people of a consenting age should be allowed to lawfully wed. Shame on Maine and every other state that is afraid of equality.

I was brought up thinking gay marriage was wrong and something I should not support ( bc my parents were brought up that way as well) but as the years have passed both my parents and myself have tossed our former beliefs to the wayside and fully support gay marriage. I cannot say the same for the can't teach an old dog new tricks is the best way i can phrase it.

ella - I saw an interview with that convience store owner and he says a lady came running in awhile back claiming that Anthony was trying to strangle her and that she had bruises all over his neck. But he wasn't sure what to do or whether to believe her.

Yoga.. I live in Cleveland, and it's sort of non stop.. he's on every news page - lots of updates. SO far they have found 10 bodies and another skull in his house. They are digging up the yard, have cadaver sniffing dogs combing the neighborhood, and they are expanding their search of surrounding abandoned homes. There was actually a story where they talked to the guy who owns a neighborhood convience store across the street from his house. I guess he kept coming in and asking for heavy duty garbage bags - saying he was "cleaning out his house" and he would come back often for them... It's pretty creepy. A lot of people are coming forward to say that there children have been missing for a while. Seems like the ages of the victims are all over the charts - from their 30s to their 60s...

So sad about gay marriage in Maine! I wonder if it's a case where the people against it just were that more proactive about getting out to vote rather than people who supported it or didn't care and weren't getting out to vote. I think people who are opposed to something are more likely to be proactive voicing their opposition (or voting in this case), than people who support something already in place. 2nd - That Anthony Sowell is a sick man.
