GQ Names Barack Obama "Man of the Year"

GQ Names Barack Obama "Man of the Year"

GQ named Barack Obama one if its "Men of the Year" in an issue that went to print before Election Day. Obama graces one of four different covers among the likes of Michael Phelps, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jon Hamm, and includes an article written by Senator Ted Kennedy. Obama is called the "Game Changer of the Year," and in his intro Kennedy says:

Whether he wins or loses, Barack Obama has ushered in a new era of American politics with a limitless vision of a better future that will endure for many years to come. Through his candidacy, Obama has provided a glimpse of a stronger, better, fairer America, where change comes from the bottom up, where we all come together to meet the great challenges of our time. He has inspired millions of new voters of all ages, races, and incomes to lend their voices for real change. For in this man, Americans can see not just the audacity but the possibility of hope for the country that is yet to be.

The magazine's website also features a picturesque look back at the men and women of the 2008 campaign.

He looks so cute here. I don't think he looks that much darker. Brown people show up all sorts of shades in different color lights. Now if he looked Michelle's color then...yeah that would be weird.

that was kind of a no brainer to be honest - i had a feeling that throughout the campaign with all the talk about the impact that he was having on history and all that - that he would be voted MOTY.

Rmur - it's the white background that's making him appear darker. I can speak from experience. Most photographers having difficulty doing portraiture of brown, black and olive complexions because it requires serious effort and energy learning to white balance the subject against the background and use the proper lighting. Those greys in Barack's hair have cropped up very fast since January of this year. Possibly stressed induced greying. I know that I temporarily go grey whenever I am incredibly stressed. When I was in L.A. last year or so I saw Halle Berry and I just kept looking at her because I thought the woman was a look-a-like. Halle Berry is nowhere near as dark as photos and movies make her appear. I think Spike Lee was closest on getting her complexion correct in Jungle Fever. She's got a rosy undertone and I'd say she's light beige (as my nephews call themselves at best). Stupid side note- my nephews are biracial (really multi-racial) but to people who see them independent of any browner family members they are white boys. When people see them with their blond, blue eyed older brother they think their just surfer boys with a very slight tan. Both nephews photograph darker. So dark in fact that they've both had a bit of trouble with their passports. They both went to Germany and the Germany officials looked at their pictures and thought that in the passport photo they were Algerian or Moroccan or Middle East and much darker than they are in real life. In person the Germany customs official told them they are white.

I'm going to send Pres-Elest Obama my dad's last bottle of Grecian Formula. I fear that he will be like Bill and within a year be completely gray and haggard looking. Such a strenuous job.

UnDave- I think DeCaprio has been doing a lot of environmental work in the last year. He's the new Al Gore. Maybe Obama will offer him the climate czar role since Al turned it down LOL!

Thanks for the link Citizen... I totally missed it! steph - I just went over and posted some suggestions on TS's thread. Maybe that'll help? I mean, I just saw a headline about Obama getting control of a chunk of the bailout money... Presidency in action! That's huge news.

No Krank, I even agree - we're missing out on a lot of important and more interesting issues here.

Definitely better than Walters' list. I think Game Changer is perfectly accurate for Obama. One of the big rags against him when he started to run was that he didn't really know how the game was played in Washington.

piper - Yeah, it does. While I can totally appreciate that people want to know more about Obama, there's lots of newsworthy stuff that isn't getting play, like - Obama has selected his General Counsel, the whole automaker bailout thing, rumors about what the next session of Congress will bring us, turbulence in the stock market... Am I the only one who wants to take a closer look at some of this stuff? I'd be happy to keep my trap shut for the greater good if that's the case... I mean, there's no point in having a discussion with myself!

Hey Citizen! Thanks for the follow-up! The Model Citizen Group is not what I had in mind, but it is interesting. Last week, Liberty (I think) posted a group we could join and post article we wanted to discuss. I joined, but can no longer find it. Does that help? Thanks!

Better than the Barbara Walters most fascinating for 2008 list. Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Frank Langella, Rush Limbaugh - I don't know what she was thinking.

An even better question would be what did Phelps do besides swim really fast... Totally agree pinkprincess. The very fact that he ran for presidency was sooo good.
