Glenn Beck's Tactics: Dangerous, Delusional, or Dead On?

Glenn Beck's Tactics: Dangerous, Delusional, or Dead On?

By now we all know that Glenn Beck is a little extreme in his rhetoric. Well yesterday he took his impersonation of President Obama to the next level. The Fox News host imitated the president by pouring "gasoline" on an "average American." The manic metaphor was supposed to explain that Barack Obama is setting the American public on fire by apologizing to the "Frenchy French," sort of bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia, hinting toward a change in Cuban policy, taking on immigration, and pushing through his budget. Beck said Obama was "spending money that leads only to slavery."

Take a look, it gets extra intense toward the end, and tell me what you make of it?

First, I think the poll is a bit skewed. There's only three options and an other: Dangerous, Crazy, and Agree. There's only one "Agree", but two "not agrees". If it were more equal, it would probably be, "Dangerous", "Crazy", "Agree", "Agree but over the top". Thus, the way it is worded, it appears more people completely agree with Beck. Second, Beck is a genuine kook. Just because he's a conservative, doesn't mean all conservatives have to support him. There is a rational way to express your thoughts without pouring make-belief gasoline over an over-dramatic actor, telling people to stab the "blood-sucking vampires" in Washington DC with wooden stakes, and on and on and on. He was semi-lucid on headline news but is now completely off the rocker.

When you lack the verbal communication skills to actually tell people what you want to say (say maybe because it makes no sense?), then using such tactics to illustrate illogical talking points and arguments just takes away any sort of credibilty that's left here.... and I don't even want to start to talk about that I just don't get why all these things that Citizen names in this post actually makes Beck think it equals "setting america on fire". Not in a million years would that actually makes sense in my eyes...

Whatever. I've never watched this guy b/c he's always seemed like a quack - and watching this just reinforces that for me. I like how Beck uses the "Bridge to Nowhere"...anybody remember that? ANYONE??? :D oh well I L'edOL. The imagery isn't extreme, it's just stupid. All of it. If he's so afraid that ONE MAN is going to destroy a nation after 200 years of standing with ALL KINDS of presidents and coming off of 8 years' worth of policies that have directly contributed to the terrible things he's complaining about today...well I'm pretty sure that this is all just a big fearmongering.

Even my fiance who used to love watching him on Headline thinks that Glenn Beck has become v. caricature. He still watches him on Fox sometimes, but he can't stand it because he said Beck kept crying or something like that. Maybe he's doing this for the rating or something, this way, people get to be talking about him and such. Whether it's pro or against him, his tactic works to get both sides's attention. Hey, it's made it on citizensugars! LOL.

I can't believe someone compared Rachel Maddow to Glen Beck. What has she ever done that compares to his latest stunt?

Really? Not someone who wants to flavor tofu with george clooney's essence? Not a crazed PETA person? Not someone who blows up abortion clinics? Not someone who over or under eats/works out? This guy has a tv show. His sole purpose is to make money. By being outrageous, he does just that...see Howard Stern, Anne Coulter, etc. He isn't an anchorman, he is an entertainer.

My comment there could be taken wrong - I don't mean there are as many people who are extremest in this country...just that extremest views are bad whether you have them in the middle east or america.

That guy is insane and I really hope people don't take him seriously...extremest thinking in this country is just as bad as extremest thinking in the Middle East and this guy could be the spokesmodel for American extremest thinking.

"But when the "world" needs us to be its police we arent quite so arrogant anymore." CaterpillarGirl you're right we're not because we're protecting our interests just as much as helping them protect theirs. There is no good deed that excuses difficult or bad behavior. No one is suggesting and certainly not the President that America should be ashamed of what it is. Pardon the expression but it takes real balls to own up to a wrong but I have to tell you anyone that does whether it be person or nation they have my respect but on the other hand if the attitude is F you we're doing what we want why should I like you or even consider cooperative diplomacy?

Also, comparing Colbert to Beck? Uh, here's a hint--one uses satire for a COMEDY show, the other one is just a total joke. Take your pick, I guess!

People are concerned about OctoMom having a show, while this wack job already has one? Please. :oy:

Contrary to what seems to happen on this board everything is not split by liberals and conservatives. What he did could incite those who side with him to perform like gestures just as Colbert's comment could do the same to his viewers. I am sure that everything that is seen on television is not taken literal by most or the world, but everyone should use some form of filter in case impressionable are watching, even if you are on cable. There are people on both sides of the fence who don't and it makes no sense pointing who "mostly" or "largely" does not. I don't have issue with the point he was trying to make because it is his opinion. I am just saddened to see him go down a road where he is becoming a caricature of himself.

Dead on. Beck is using in-your-face imagery to get valid points across.

How about the illegals put themselves in other people's shoes? There are plenty of people that want to migrate to the US. Many of them are waiting patiently to do so. Many others are already here legally. What makes the illegal ones so special that they should get moved to the head of the line?

I don't know if the question was for me Hain but I will state my opinion. Of course, he isn't. This is what he believes Obama is doing to us. Beck wouldn't condone anything of the such. Beck was seen on a much larger scale as a television commentator who gave his opinions about the going's on in America, for the most part, in a respectable and reputable manner. He has always been passionate but that is what I liked about him. He gave fire without shoving it down your throat. Lately, it seems as if he has turned the show into a circus sideshow more often than not. The crying, excessive ranting and now this. I, personally, am trying to hold on to the respect I had for him as a real and intelligent commentator.

"I guess if you've never even given thought to being in someone else's shoes for one second" What is this supposed to mean?

"So are we really to think that just because Colbert says "hey guys gather your pitchforks and let's go!" it's a dangerous threat and people will in fact do it??" The same could be said about the conservative pundits who make the same comments.
