Hearing Others Have Sex

In the apartment where I live, saying the walls are thin is a major understatement — I'm constantly hearing my neighbors having sex. While it totally grosses me out, I have to say I'm happy for them. I do feel a little guilty when I pass them in the hallway, but do you think they have any idea that I can hear their most intimate moments?

Has this ever happened to you? Do you ever hear your neighbors having sex? If so, do you bang on the walls? Joke about it with them later? Or do you just grin and bear it, and try your best to ignore it?

I have only recently started to hear the new neighbor having sex. He is a friendly and likeable young guy who goes out of his way to help other people in the block. Every night at around the same time I hear the distinct phases of his lovemaking: talking and laughing, tv turned off, silence, the bed creaking as it takes the weight of two, silence punctuated by an occassional creak and nondescript noise, laughing, low gentle moans accompanied by the sound of the bed creaking for about 5 minutes, silence, slightly louder grunting and creaking for about 10 minutes, silence, feverish grunting / snorting and clanging as the metal frame of the bed crashes against the wall, higher pitched moans punctuated by silence leading to complete silence for about two minutes, the creak of the bed as he dismounts and rolls onto his back, sleep. I really enjoy his performance.

mmm... I really don't mind it. If it sounds funny, I get to laugh for a while. If it sounds hot, I get turned on. And it's lame, I just ignore it. I only feel uncomfortable with it when I can hear my parents, because of the mental image, and the fact that it's just too... weird, I don't know. Glad that they still are hot for each other though. :P It's a natural aspect of life, I mean... it would be terrible if even for that little part of joy and liberation that is so necessary in some people's lives, they should also have to think about keeping it quiet. How much can it last to bother so much? An hour at the very best (unless you're having sex with Sting, haha)? Come on!

It is pretty annoying. But most of the time I just laugh about it. When we used to live in an apartment; we heard our neighbors going at it a few times. But we moved to a house, so it was all good. :-) ashley xoxo

Holy crap. It's really funny that this is a topic. My neighbors are really loud. I don't mind the sex part as much as I mind the sh*tty music they play so loud. Usually the people you can hear having sex are the ones that don't care that they play crappy music too loud and are too dumb to move their headboard away from being against the wall. If you live in an apartment don't put your headboard against the wall, people!

Loud & proud. HAHAHA. I know people hear me & I'm sorry if it makes them uncomfortable. But maybe I'm more sorry that I'm having great sex & they're not? :-P Ok ok, let me stop.

I am all for loud sex. When my husband and I are going at it, I could not even try and keep quiet, it ruins it for me. If you are living in an apartment, it definitely sucks when people are loud during sex. Unfortunately for you ppl with loud neighbours, sex is a natural part of life, we are meant to do that, therefore complaining to a landlord seems pointless, they cant do anything about it!!! If you know the person, mention to them you can hear them. How could you have the nerve to go to the landlord and complain? Im pretty sure in the dead of the night you can hear the neighbour next door pee, and you dont complain about that do you?

haha peaches, it bothers me, but I have a friend at school who thinks it funny and it doesn't bother her at all. By the way I'm pretty sure the person living above me is having sex right now...probably too much information

So is it really true that AKirstin and myself are the only ones who actually enjoy this? Not that I want to hear it all the time, but back in college I certainly didn't mind hearing people every once in a while ;)

When I was in grad school, I lived in an apartment that had super thin walls. The first couple of guys who had the bedroom on the other side of my wall were very quiet, but the last guy...not only could I hear his girlfriend's loud moans (and I always knew when she was about to um...finish), but as late as 4 am I would hear him say, "I'm gonna tickle you...I'm gonna tickle youuuuu!!!!" and then she'd scream. I usually found it funny unless I was in a bad mood, lol. I think it's worse if it's a actually feels really awkward when that's the situation. I had one roommate who was having sex in her room one night and I could honestly hear certain noises that you should only hear if YOU are the one having sex.

Haha, Bookish, you rock! Living in a dorm was terrible... I lived in a triple (but with one bedroom) and one night my roommates and I were all in our beds, trying to fall asleep, when you heard the telltale grunts and moans and squeaks. We were all silent for a while until finally I was like "You guys hear that right?" and they both said "...Yeah..." and we all moved into the living room and waited it out. The worst part was we knew who it was, because one of my roommates was the Sexual Health Rep for the floor and the guy had come by to get condoms earlier in the day. Really could have gone without picturing this guy having sex...

I live in a dorm, talk about thin walls. I can essentially hear a pin drop in the rooms on either side of mine...So yeah, headphones become your best friend

They should know that the walls are thin. But give them the benefit of the doubt, since there is always the chance that they just haven't thought about it that way. If it really bothers you, I do think that playing loud music would do the trick.

Guilty. *blush* I'm not a very quiet lover. I am, however, not obnoxious. So, I do try to stifle the noise I may make.

luckily in the apartment complex we live in you can't hear that much through the walls... but when i first moved in with my boyfriend--we heard his roomate and the roomies gf have sex ALL the time. it was the most awkward thing bc you'd be sleeping in on a saturday morning and you'd just hear them wailing away at each other. i'm all about having a good time but after a while (and saying things in passing to them about it) they just seemed to get louder and bolder with it.. so i think i'd be able to deal w/ hearing neighbors hahah

When we went on a cruise last year the people in the cabin next to us were really loud, the man more than the woman. But seriously it only lasted a minute at the most. We used to just laugh at them, it was kinda of funny but kind of sad because it was so short.

I must be the biggest prude on this site because it actually bothers me that girls are commenting that their boyfriends parents have heard them. I never, ever had sex with a guy when his parents were home. That just strikes me as so disrespectful. Okay. I'm done now. :D :D

I hear my neighbors all the time! Sometimes if it gets really annoying hearing them the next time my boyfriend and I have sex I make sure that we are extra loud to annoy them back!

You all are making me feel better about our noisy apt. We have lived here so long and we are as quiet as we can be but we can hear a lot from downstairs. It's time to move.

Used to live in an apartment with really thin walls. The noise levels were high anyway- the guy played the bass guitar in the evenings and into the early morning hours, and there was lots of sex sounds. All the time, morning noon or night, "Oh Jimmy! Oh Jimmy!". Until I started shouting back "Oh Jimmy! Oh Jimmy! Don't stop, Jimmy!". They got a lot quieter after that.

I work in an apartment building and people actually call to complain about hearing their neighbors have sex. So we have to send them a letter and I usually put a discreet "and other noises" in there. Then, once, a girl called to ask what kind of noises they were, so I told her it was from her neighbor below. In the bedroom. And she said, "Ooooh. Okay." And I heard my upstairs neighbors once... but it only lasted like five minutes, so at least I could sleep. But I really wanted to go up there and tell them that first, I hope their baby isn't in the room because that's kinda creepy and second, move their bed away from the wall!
