The How-To Lounge: Avoiding Weight Gain at Work

Do you ever ask yourself if your job is making you fat? Well if so, you're not alone. For some easy tips on how to keep your waistline from expanding, click here to

  • According to Glamour Magazine, a new British study found that chronically stressed women are 73% more likely to become obese than their more relaxed co-workers despite diet and exercise, so staying calm at work is critical
  • Even though it seems like there aren't enough hours in the day, it's important to make friends at work. Not only will it give you a break from your job, but you will have someone to small talk with, gossip with, even commiserate with
  • If your company stocks a lot of junk food in the kitchen, try to avoid it at all costs. Opt for healthy snacks like nuts and veggies instead
  • Getting out of the office for lunch is important as well. When you eat at your desk you're less focused on your lunch, which can lead to over-eating so try to take at least 20 minutes away from your desk
  • Some say that when you're in a subordinate role at work, you're more likely to get bored and distracted which can lead to grazing and over eating, so if you can, take on more responsibility and keep busy

Good luck and if you have any tips that work for you, please share them in the comments below.

I have a problem with water. I know it sounds strange but I really do hate water. I was in the Army and after I got out I can't look at a bottle of water without wanting to puke. I'm trying flavored water and even those Crystal Light packets (wich are fantastic!) But I cant seem to avoid a frappuccino or a diet soda..... Sigh oh well at least I avoid most of the other pitfalls at work....

I pack my lunch as often as posible so I'm not eating from the cafeteria (vomits!!!) or outside fast food places. Saves me calories and money! I also pack my own snacks: trail mix, fruit, etc. in mini re-sealable bags so I have them ready and on hand. It keeps me from going to the vending machines. Oh, and a 32 oz. re-fillable water bottle that I can re-fill at the water cooler :)

Offices are junk food havens, although I'm not sure why. I suggest being sure to eat breakfast and bring your own lunch. And I'll echo the others on drinking lots of water.

At my last job they had a huge junk food room full of everything from twix bars and hersheys to popcorn and muffins. It was a nightmare and a dream at the same time!!! To make matters worse they found an excuse to order food for everything!!! Real holidays to not so real holidays...happy kids day, lets get some pizza! Happy 12th anniversary of the restaurant down the street, Indian food for all! We celebrated birthdays with the best cake, so delicious. There was a ridiculous huge food budget and all the food was very tasty but I would try and limit myself by bringing a lunch or filling myself with water or coffee beforehand so I didn't eat so much of it, Let me tell you though it was HARD!!! No weight gain thank God!!! But very very difficult, glad I am out of that temptation!

It's so hard to resist goodies at work--the easist thing to do is to bring your own healthy snacks--that way if you get hungry you won't go grabbing at the nearest vending machine.

WATER!!!! Everyone that drinks those carbonated drinks throughout the day is doing nothing but adding on pounds! Even if you are drinking a Diet soda, you're still not doing yourself any favors. I'm telling you, take a cute water bottle to work and refill it all day. You'll save money, help the environment and lose weight. TRY IT.

Caterpillar Girl, those are great ideas. I love those stackable lunch containers. It's really bizarre that someone asked you to do her grocery shopping. I sit at desk that gets lots of traffic and when I started here there was a candy dish on the desk for everyone. That was a big stumbling block so I got rid of it after I realized that I would never control myself to not take candy from it. Nobody misses it.

Let me tell you I am one of the healthier women at work. I am 5’2 weigh 125 lbs, but its not genetic. I have had “food issues” in the past, disorders, and I am steadfast about staying well. So I avoid the pitfalls here, these women bring in Krispy Kreme donuts all hot and fresh. They bring in Muffins, rolls, bagels and cream cheese, chips and dip, crackers, you name it they bring it. They leave “treats” in my office when I run to the copier thinking that if they give it to me anonymously I will eat it! I always toss it. I am not starving to death! I just don’t want to eat junk. I eat in my office, instead of the break room because I was tired of being asked “how I stay skinny” one woman even asked me to grocery shop for her. I never eat fast food, I always make my own lunches. I pack my lunches in a “Mr. Bento” which is a product made by a Japanese company Zojirushi. “Enter the Zojirushi Mr. Bento lunch jar, which comes with a series of microwaveable bowls that keep food hot while you're working. The bowls come in 15.2-, 10.1-, 9.5-, and 6.8-ounce sizes, perfect for rice, soup, a main dish, and a side dish. The bowls also stack conveniently inside the washable container, which employs vacuum-insulated stainless-steel construction to preserve the temperature of its contents for hours. If the bowls aren't necessary for your meal, simply use the jar by itself to keep other foods hot or cool. The bundle even comes with an easy-to-carry bag for convenient transport.” Let me tell you how much I love this thing, it keeps me from eating a ton and its hella cute. Its a little expensive but i have had mine for 4 years already and its still in perfect shape. there is even a "mr bento" pool on where we all trade recipes that fit conveniently into it.
