How Can I Get My Foot In The Door?

Dear Sugar
I just graduated with my Esthetics license. I'm so happy but I'm having a hard time finding a job.

Right now I'm a full time admin assistant, and I would like to find a job doing waxing or facials part time, or even do house calls since I don't have my own room set up yet - but I do have all the necessary equipment.

Do you have any suggestions about going out and finding the right weekend-only job until I get a little bit of experience in the industry? My admin job has great health benefits which I can't give up.

Ideally, I would like to find something but I think it's kind of embarrassing to go into an actual salon and get turned down on the spot. Needs Experience Emma

That's what I would do. Be a door to door saleswoman and sell yourself! Pound that pavement and be your own advocate - no job is going to fall right into your lap.

Ask salons if they need a part timer or someone who's on call to fill in when someone can't make it. Explain how you've just graduated and you'd like to gain experience. Lots of times, volunteering as an intern can help you get your foot in the door too.

Start with the big guys and shoot for the stars. Wouldn't a job at a top spa be a dream come true?! If they turn you down, be polite (always smile and thank them for their time) and leave them with a resume.

Also, ask them how they got their start in the biz. Not only do people love to talk about themselves, but you never know what could generate your next idea. Good luck and congrats on your graduation.

Hi Emma, I used to manage a Day Spa in Sydney Australia so I can't imagine things are too different over there! I hired a number of girls who started out just doing work experience then I would give them weekend and evening work as they needed it! We are always looking for excited and motivated staff and I along with everybody I spoke to in the industry, was willing to accomodate somebody who is eager to learn and hard working! My tips would be to call and speak to the manager and see if you can arrange a time to go in and speak to them. Take along your resume with a cover letter saying why you want to get into the industry, basically the more passionate you sound the better! Always look the part when you go in to see them with immaculate makeup and pulled back hair. **As a side note I once had a interview with a lovely lady with great qualifications but when she came in she had to longest finger nails. The first thing I thought was how are you going to do facilas or massages with those talons!** The best spas need great staff just as much as others so don't see yourself short. Also be willing to do unpaid work experience this will soon turn to paid work. It also gives you a chance to see if you will be happy there. Only do a small amount of unpaid work and let them know that you would like to move to paid work. Don't let people take advantage! Anyway hope I didn't ramble on too much, and I hope that helped!! -kel x

I always think shops that do nails shold offer this type of service. What about going around to some shops in your area and asking if you could rent a booth there? You could put up those folding screens for privacy. The Whole Foods in our neighborhood does back massage at the front of the store using the screens and they do a pretty brisk business. Not to be a nervous Nelly, but going to private homes sounds a little scary to me. There are just so many weirdos out there.

Emma, after my friend graduated from school, she went and applied at Mario Tricoci. She's starting out at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak (doing bikini waxes and the like) but eventually hopes to move up. I'd def inquire to your local salons if they are hiring, or go in yourself for a wax or facial and casually inquire if they are hiring. If you don't want to go in, just call them, that may be less embarrassing for you. And Nomerz is right, your school should hopefully have some sort of job board or job assistance. Good luck!

I am going to cosmetology school right now to get my esthetician license. Did your school have a job board? Mine doesn't garuntee placement, but it helps you with finding jobs and such. This business is all about networking, so maybe the contacts that you made at school would have some ideas... hope that helps! xox

i would be all over the house calls! if you had enough equipment to bring with you, i would think you would have hundreds of people taking you up on that! in fact, when can i get you to come to my house?! :)

Needs Experience Emma, I like your idea regarding house calls. Host a "spa" party for some friends and ask them to invite a few others. You could do mini facials while they all sip cosmos (pro-bono of course sans license). With that in mind, you might want to look into a bus. license. I had a friend who owned a "traveling spa" which catered to the Sororities on his college campus! Pretty smart if you ask me. Not only will you have fun, but you'll gain experience and hopefully establish a nice client base, which you can boast about to a prospective employer! Good Luck!
