How To Create Natural Waves Without Using Heat

Dear Sugar
I straighten my hair everyday (I've been doing it for 3 years now) and in these last few months, I've noticed a lot more split ends than normal. I know there is no way to get rid of them entirely (other than getting a haircut) but I was thinking about stopping straightening my hair to help prevent future damage. Is there any product that I can use when I get out of the shower to make my hair wavy or curly, other than using a curling iron? Split End Jenn

Dear Split End Jenn
You are correct in thinking to stop straightening your hair and to avoid using a curling iron right now. Heat is the #1 cause of hair shaft damage (which is irreparable).

  • Firstly - get a trim to get rid of the split ends. They will only worsen if you don't act fast.
  • Next, get into the habit of doing a weekly hair mask/deep conditioning/hot oil treatment to return your hair to a hydrated state. I've listed some terrific products here.
  • Next, when you get out of the shower, gently, towel dry your hair and comb it out with a wide toothed plastic comb. Spritz a little bit of Wella's Color Preserve Detangler & Leave-In Conditioner to the ends of your hair. Stay away from the roots or your hair will look greasy and limp.
  • Scrunch you hair a couple of times with a loose fist in 3 separate sections and . . . voila, you've got an updated version of "The Rachel."
