I Spent My Valentine's Afternoon With an NFL Player (Instead of My Boyfriend)

Feb 18 2017 - 2:20pm

Most people would spend any spare moment of their Valentine's Day with their significant other, but I spent my afternoon with an NFL player. (Shout-out to my boyfriend who was equally as excited for me as I was.) So, when we got an email for a "romantic rendezvous" in the park with San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead, I obviously said yes. After he gave out free hugs and Suja Juice [1] to those passing by, I got to talk love with the 23-year-old, who was at first adorably uncomfortable about the subject.

Arik said he didn't have any romantic plans for the rest of the day, so let's just go ahead and say that I was the closest thing to being his Valentine's Day date. (Again, my boyfriend is extremely supportive.) And by the way, his answer was "complicated" when asked about his relationship status, so there may be hope for some of you. Here are some things I learned when talking to the soft-spoken teddy bear.

On remembering a date that didn't go as planned:

POPSUGAR: Have you ever had a terrible date or a date that's gone wrong?

Arik Armstead: Yeah, I have. When I was broke in high school, I tried to take this girl out and I took her to eat. But I only had $40 and our meal ended up being like $45, and I'm like, "Um . . ."

PS: What did you do then? Ask her for $5?

AA: Well, that's the only option I had. It was kind of awkward but she still went for me. So it wasn't that big of a deal. But I was in high school, though!

On approaching girls:

PS: What's your go-to pick-up line?

AA: I don't really have pick-up lines. I feel like a girl decides in her head if she's interested or not, so there's not really much you have to say.

PS: But you would approach her?

AA: Yeah, I'd just be like, "How you doing? My name is . . . what's your name?" But I feel like once someone sees you, it's either going to be a yes or no, so it doesn't really matter what I say to start the conversation.

On Beyoncé and hygiene:

PS: What's the biggest turn-off in a girl?

AA: Bad hygiene is definitely the biggest turn-off.

PS: That's a deal-breaker right there?

AA: Yeah.

PS: What if it was like Beyoncé?

AA: And she had bad hygiene? I would not.

PS: Oh my god, everything else is the same but if she had bad hygiene you'd stop it right there?

AA: Yeah, that's nasty.

PS: You wouldn't even be like, "Bey, c'mon."

AA: Nah, I feel like you're a grown woman and at this point if you have bad hygiene, it's never going to work no matter what I say. You're a grown woman, you should take care of yourself. So bad hygiene is definitely the biggest turn-off — and nails. If you don't take care of your nails, then I'm thinking what else don't you take care of.

Beyoncé, if you're reading this, please forgive Arik, for he is confused. If any lucky ladies score a date with Arik, he loves to eat, so take him somewhere good.
