Jon Stewart to Bill Clinton: Are You Batman?

Just like Jon Stewart, I was wondering what the heck must have gone through Bill Clinton's mind when he met North Korea's Kim Jong Il with hopes of securing the release of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. Well last night, the former president chatted with Jon about the whole ordeal. My favorite part came when Jon asked Bill about his role as Batman, since, you know, Clinton acts as an international superhero these days. Clinton revealed that he prefers to think of himself as a character from a James Bond movie. Check out the clip!

I liked Bill Clinton, and I thought he was a good President. Country was stable during his eight years, economy grew, govt got smaller, we had a budget surplus a couple years, people were happy. But... it also seemed like 8 years of lost opportunity. 8 years where great things could have happened - and yet nothing really big happened. No great ideas. Maybe the failed attempt to get health care passed took the wind out of his sails and he decided to go for small things. Example: Used to be that if a govt inspector went to a workplace and there wasn't that "Your Rights as an Employee" poster on the wall, the inspector would have to fine you and write up a report and all this crap. That rule got changed so that the inspector could just go to his car, grab a poster and tape it to the wall himself. Yes, that's less red tape. But where's... our shot at the moon? Where's our great push for justice or changing the world? Didn't happen. I also lay a small amount of blame for 9/11 on Bill Clinton. Why? Because he had that stupid affair with Monica Lewinsky. And because of that affair nothing - absolutely nothing - got done in Washington for two years while they had that ridiculous impeachment trial. Nothing got done on fighting terrorism. And then Al Gore lost the election - which I also partially blame on his distancing himself from Clinton (because of the affair) - I believe that if Clinton had campaigned (or been allowed to) on Gore's behalf, Gore (who, unlike Bill, is stiff and uncharismatic) would have won. But, because Gore lost, Bush replaced a lot of key intelligence people with his own cronies (who knew nothing about intelligence) - and vital people and information was lost in the transition from Gore to Bush (remember, Sept. 11 3/4 of a year after the transition). I also don't think that Gore's people (who were very detail oriented) would have ignored a report that terrorists might be planning a big attack. That said, all in all, I think Bill Clinton was a good President. The country was, all in all, in a good place for 8 years. I only wish that he had had more ambition - and could have kept his pants zipped.
