Jon Stewart on the Birthers: What Is Going On Here?!

People won't stop talking about President Barack Obama's citizenship this week. News sources from Fox News to CNN are inexplicably giving air time to the so-called "birthers" — people who believe that the president was not born in the United States and that his official Hawaiian birth certificate is a fake. On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart explored the (comical) evidence supporting the theory that Obama is not only the first black US president, but also the first non-American president, while trying to answer the question I keep coming back to: "What is going on here?!?!"

Sigh. Once again, it's just him. I would rather have... (and yes, I include historical and fictional figures here in no particular order) Clarance Thomas... David and Wayne Palmer (from the show 24)...Mae C. Jemison-NASA astronaut...Guion Bluford-NASA astronaut...Bill Cosby...George Washington Carver (alumni of Iowa State)...Alan Keys...JC Watts...Ellis Washington...just to name a few. To borrow a quote from the last administration-"(Almost) Anything But Obama!"

Amazing how a comedy show host is more of a tell-it-like-it-is newscaster than the actual journalists/newscasters. Stewart is brilliant and this segment on the birthers proves it.

Some people will continue to whine about this forever, so why is the media STILL giving these people any coverage?

What disturbs me about the birthers is their refusal to accept facts. Here's the birth certificate! Here's the newspaper announcement! On and on, evidence arises, yet some people continue to say otherwise. For me, this isn't a partisan thing — I'd say the birthers are wrong whether it was Obama, McCain, or anyone else — and it boggles the mind that facts seem to hold so little sway for some people.

Well, birthers are a breed similar to that of the Apollo 11 deniers, Roswell UFO believers, scientologists, fundamentalist Christians, and generally any other conspiracy-spouting nutjob morons who base their beliefs on false assumptions and ignorance of evidence. What I loved about the episode was how completely insane everything was--Lou Dobbs sympathizing with birthers, Michael Jackson who is creepy and a bit insane, Kevin Nealon chatting about autoerotic asphyxiation (funniest Weeds scene ever), and to top it all off a clip of queen crazy Liz Cheney on John King. There's some scary sort of perversity tying all four of those things together.

what's going on here is racism, pure and simple. the people supporting this movement are desperately grasping for ways to say "this man is not one of 'us'." if you combine this with the way some senators were treating sotomayor during the hearings, as if her being shaped by her latina heritage made her somehow less impartial than a white man, what you will see is a group of people desperately trying to cling to an america where anything other than dominant whiteness is a problem.
