Juliette Binoche on the Unbearable Side of Being in a Relationship

We can have great friends, family, and a fulfilling job, but if we're not in a relationship, some of us might feel like there is something missing, or at least societal pressures make us question ourselves. But as French actress Juliette Binoche explained in a recent interview, there's a downside to being paired up. You can feel tied down and less independent. She said:

"I need relationships, but sometimes when I am in one I feel claustrophobic. It is about feeling that I still have my freedom, that I have choices. I don't look back on the past because I like to live in the present. I know this makes some people think I probably never cared, but I need my freedom and I like to keep moving."

Her sentiment is a reminder that each person can feel their best in very different relationship situations. Maybe you're more fulfilled with a partner by your side, or perhaps you feel free to be you when you have no one to answer to but yourself. Do you relate to Juliette's comments?

I understand and quoite feel the same (maybe not claustrophobic, but...). And to separate for 1-2 days, it is to better reunite. Like in SATC 2, when Charlottes use the appartment. I know a lady divorced, she has her kids 1 week out of 2, and she says "i love deeply my kids... but i feel good the week they're not there. it's a good balence, time for me, time for them" and i feel it would be a little like this for me with my guy. Just time to be on my own. Like in the book by the writter of the Devil wears Prada (the green on), the caracter Leigh that stays alone on mondays. I'd like it too.

Ah. Is she projecting Sabine in a way, I wonder. Sabine was a really good character, love the movie and the book. To an extent, I think I got what she's trying to say.

I do relate as far as liking my space, but when she says she 'needs' relationships but feels 'claustrophobic' in them... she just sounds miserable. I don't personally know her enough to judge and I'm not famous to know, but SKG I think you might be right about that.

This is exactly how I am. I'm a very independent person. I'm connected with my man on all levels and I love him dearly. But I need my space, as a human, I need my space.

I can see where she's coming from. I love my current boyfriend dearly, we even live together, but I still crave a certain amount of independence. Constant togetherness can be stifling to a free spirit like myself.

She eez so French! And I know what she means. Even in the happiest of my relationships, I've always needed a sense of independence and solo time. Even now, if I spend too much time with Mr. Bella, I'll need a few days by myself. Doesn't mean he's not amazing, just means I don't want to be around anyone 24/7. One of my brothers and his wife have a wonderful marriage -- and have for almost two decades -- in part because they still do things on their own, with their own friends, and have a healthy balance because of it.

I don't relate at all. Well, not now anyway. I was in a relationship for a number of years with someone I didn't trust (but pretended I did), and I spent the entire time feeling upset, nervous, worried, on edge - knowing he would let me down, always feeling separation anxiety and fear of abandonment. So THAT is a little claustrophobic. It wasn't until I was out of that that I felt so much less tied down, and so much more free. But in good relationships, I don't feel that way.
