Lied About Debt

"I Lied About My Debt"

This week's confession comes from our anonymous Confession Booth group in the TrèsSugar Community. Weigh in with your advice below.

OK, well not exactly. But I led my boyfriend of two years to believe that I don't have any debt, when in reality I have $1,200 on credit cards and about $5,000 in loans. It seems not that bad, especially since it's for school. But I feel bad I didn't tell him.

There's lots of important stuff going on in our community. Join it, check it out, share your posts or advice in the great groups, and maybe we'll feature it here.

I think my answer here depends on the state of your relationship. Are you considering getting married? Combining finances? Buying a house together? If any of those things, then you do need to be open about your debt and what you are doing to pay it down. I firmly believe that couples need to be open about financial issues if they are combining their lives in a meaningful way, because it can really affect the other person. I would be angry if I found out that my husband lied to me about having debt-and it wouldn't be about the debt itself. I get having debt and hating that you do have it. I have student loan debt and although I don't regret my education, I do hate my debt. But if you are paying it on time and you can handle the payments, there is no need to be so ashamed of it.

the true question here is, has he asked you if you have any debt? if so then being honest is the key and also assuring him that you are taking care of it by slowly paying it off. just remember if the shoe was on the other foot wouldnt you want to know or know that the person you are dating is not in some kind of financial situation?? we have debt here and there it only becomes a problem when one does not take care of it and keeps its a secret believing its a shameful problem, only if you make it to be. just say, yeah i have student loans and some c.c. bills but i am taking care of it, no reason to worry. good luck with your finances.
