Lil Wayne's "How to Love" Music Video

Is a Softer Lil Wayne Effective at Taking On Hard Subjects in His "How to Love" Video?

Lil Wayne's new video for "How to Love" dropped today, and it doesn't waste any time getting heavy, opening in an abortion clinic. A woman about to exercise her right to choose suddenly changes her mind, and the video follows what happens next in her life, mixing in shirtless shots of Weezy throughout. We find out the pregnant woman has an abusive partner, and another child, at home. We next see her a few years later, visiting her partner in prison with the little girl she decided to have. The video follows the girl as she gets older, and deals with abuse herself, eventually spiraling downward toward stripping, then prostitution, and finally a positive HIV-test result — reminiscent of TLC's powerful 1995 video for "Waterfalls."

In the end, Lil Wayne's video takes a turn for the uplifting and finishes on a hopeful note. It tackles what seems like every controversial topic in the span of five dramatic minutes. It's sometimes hard to watch, but check it out above and then weigh in: do you think it's an effective message?
