Louisiana Teen Who Hung Nooses Gets Four Months in Prison A Louisiana teenager who hung nooses off the back of his truck to intimidate a group of black civil rights demonstrators has been sentenced to four months in prison. Federal prosecutors say 19-year-old Jeremiah Munsen displayed the nooses when he drove past people who had attended a massive civil rights march in Jena on Sept. 20. Munsen had faced up to a year in prison after pleading guilty in April to a misdemeanor charge of interfering with the marchers' federally protected right to travel.

I can't believe this kid only got 4 months in jail (not prison). I mean hanging a symbol from the back of your truck warrants a year, maybe two.

UnDave ---the sarcasm, SMH. Before generalizing about rap for what you think it is maybe you should know where the rapper is coming from. Or maybe generalization just makes your argument more relevant to you. Rap is just like any other art form for rappers, it’s their outlet whether you agree with it or not. I swear more and more, I read comments on this board about vast generalizations that you think b/c of something you’ve seen or heard. I am not saying there is bad rap because there is, not all messages are positive, but more than likely a lot of the violence depicted in rap is about other blacks or the neighborhood they are in. Even talk about the “pig” or police doesn’t take color into consideration b/c an African American cop is seen just the same as a White one. I am not saying you have to agree or disagree but don’t try to make it as you speak for these artists or know what they are talking about if you haven’t even heard their music or the songs in question. If rap was so racist and talked about killing whites, why are white teenagers the majority of people listening to the music – you think by now they would have boycotted the messages in this music instead of supporting it. Krrad - I'll agree with you about heavy metal, being anti-establishment, and in most cases satanic. There are black record labels that promote black supremacy as well, and both should be put out of business. I don't think jail will help him as much as a good butt-kicking would. I agree with you that I hope he learns his lesson.

bella, I would be happy for you to educate me. Please name some rap artists and songs that have uplifting lyrics.

Hmmm - I guess if I didn't know any better, I could say the same about heavy metal and that it is all satanic and they hate black people. ABC.com had a story about some record label that promotes white supremacy through their artists some months ago... Oh well, throw the kid in jail for a while, maybe it'll give him some time to think about what he did. The symbol is gross and it incites violence. He's lucky the police got to him before someone else did.

Well unDave, there is some rap that is uplifting and positive. So, I think maybe you should try educating yourself before generalizing.

IMO, rap music is about three things, gettin out of the ghetto, gettin' the girl, and beatin the "man" who put them down. One or more of those three things is in 98% of all rap music. Rap is never uplifting or positive. :sigh: Don't listen too much to me though, I think most "secular" music is too much about glamorized sex, or how someone else is responsible for my screwup. I'm almost completely a talk radio person now.

unDave there are loads of rap music that doesn't that is why I am asking. What do you think most rap artist talk about.

GS, I am genuinely curious, what rap music are you referring to that talks about killing white people.

I don't know about the haunted house thing.
Great-Sommelier Great-Sommelier 9 years
Me too. The fact that major performers like Common organized walk outs to support these criminals irks me to no end. But look at the supporters of OJ, and of the girls who nearly killed the three white girls leaving a haunted house.

GS, the problem with that is that it wouldn't really fall under the law they charged this man with breaking. I'm not sure how threatening "the man" in a rap song would be "interfering with the marchers' federally protected right to travel." As despicable as this guy's actions were, I'm not sure it's really criminal. I guess I'd need to know more about it. On a slightly un-related note, the march in Jena really pissed me off. Are we really marching to defend a bunch of attempted murderers? We've come a long way from the early days of the civil rights movement.

I think from other posts people have seen that I am not racist, so take this comment from the objective view of fairness please. If he is sentenced to jail for this, shouldn't every rapper who talks about doing things to "the man" or "whitey" also get jail time? Or any blatant racism for that matter. This is a slippery slope that is being started down.

The world is full of bad things... Sometimes when I see or read about things like that I wonder if the world has really changed that much over the years. :( Four months seems like a good amount of time for him to think about what he has done. However, he is 19 and months of thinking might not change his ways. It may just make him think of new ways to discriminate against others without being caught.
