Malia Obama Going to Sleepaway Camp

Do You Have Good Memories From Summer Camp?

Malia Obama will trade the White House for a cabin this Summer as she heads to sleepaway camp for the first time. The 12-year-old first daughter will be away from home for a month, joined by the familiar company of several Secret Service agents. This sounds like a plot for a Disney movie.

Spending time away from your family at camp is a coming-of-age experience. Last weekend I caught This American Life's notes on Summer camp. On the NPR radio program, adults shared memories of camp days gone by, and kids explained how their noncamp friends and family could never understand that camp was the most important thing in their lives — ever.

I am definitely a camp person: as a Girl Scout, I spent Summers at overnight camps and loved all the songs I learned, the counselors I admired, and the friends I made. If you went to sleepaway camp, what good experiences do you recall?

I always wanted to go to summer camp growing up, and was incredibly jealous of anyone who ever got to go! Every summer we would go to our trailer, so it was kind of like camp anyway, but my parents and siblings were always around. I remember reading a lot of stories, and even tried writing a few myself, about kids in summer camp.

Remember the camp being flooded out and having to take shelter in the bathroom. Remembergetting heat stroke on a hike, along with half a dozen other campers. A girl peeing in her sleeping bag, so they had her sleep in mine. And guess what?!! Yeah. I do remember getting mail and care packages and buying tns if crap from the candy store, lol.

I have mostly bad memories from camp. Every summer growing up I went to one or two one-week camps, and they were almost universally bad. When I first started going to girl scout camp, at 7 or 8 years old, there wasn't enough supervision. The first time I didn't brush my teeth for the entire week (hey, I was 7, good habits hadn't quite been ingrained yet), and none of the counselors even noticed! I also went to an equestrian camp for a few years that I loved, but that was WAY too competitive. The entire week led up to a big competition on Sunday where all our parents were invited and a small number of prizes were awarded, so all the girls at the camp were very cut-throat and trying to jockey (sorry for the pun) for the top places during the week. The other camps I went to all had drawbacks, too. One had AWFUL food with no variety - literally, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch every day for six days - and another one just wasn't outdoorsy enough. I still wonder to this day if a whole-summer kind of camp wouldn't have been a better experience - did anyone do one of those, like in the Parent Trap?

I hated camp. It was dirty, the counselors were always wrapped up in their own drama and I never got along with the other girls. The only good memory I have from summer camp is when I beat up a girl who kicked sand in my face and buried my friend's shoes at the beach.

I LOVED camp! I went to camp almost every summer as a child and when I was 11, 12, and 13 I went to sleepaway camp. At the beginning of camp we got to sign up for, I think it was 6, activities we wanted to do and each day we did like 3 activities (I think that's how it worked). I learned how to water ski and sail while at camp. I went to a jewish camp so every Friday we would have shabbat and we'd have to dress up nice and we'd sing songs and have all these activities. It was really fun. Once I was in high school I stopped going because I was such an "angsty teen" but I really wish I would have kept going. I always had such a good time.
