Miss California Is Anti Gay Marriage

Say What? Carrie Prejean on Same-Sex and Opposite Marriages

"I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage . . . I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there . . ."

—Miss California at the Miss USA 2009 competition, when asked by a judge whether or not she believes every state should follow Vermont's suit as the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. (For the record, I will heretofore refer to heterosexual unions as "opposite marriage.") To watch a video of the fact-challenged response,

I believe she clearly understood and clearly heard the question, she's just wasn't that smart to answer it nice and simple. This young woman has clearly worked more on having a great body appearance all her life, rather than getting an education. All she had to say is that she believed that a marriage is between a man and a women, because of her religion and the other ways that she was raised. But that it's nice for gay people of all races and genders to have the opportunity to marry someone of their sexual preference, so that they can feel happy in their lives together as a union. Now as for Perez Hilton, he should have NEVER been there at all asking any types of questions. And as for the question in general....who really cares what these beauty pageant women feel anyway? Especially when it comes to political views and plenty of other important issues in the world today. Their thinking can only go so we can all see with this Miss California.

To me this whole thing about homosexual rights is racism . It makes me think of the old times chen a white person couldn't marry a black person...

I believe in same sex marriage. But she has the right to her opinion; its better to be honest and say your opinion on gay marriage then to lie saying what the people want to hear.

I don't agree with her but i think she was taken aback by the question and that's why she lost all sense of articulation. She had her convictions but knew she was going to offend people (including Perez) . How can you put something like that gently?? She tried.. I also think it was sneaky of Perez Hilton to ask her that question. did he bother to ask anyone else that? if he did..where are there responses? I think he did it to watch her sweat it out

I'm glad she voiced her opinion, even with her rambling she got her point across. I will exercise my free speech by saying that Perez Hilton is a jerk, gay or not, calling a woman a bitch for espousing a belief you're opposed to is childish and rude. Long live free speech!

I think this young lady was being true to herself, and for that I applaud her. Could she have been more eloquent? Certainly! but let's face it, Perez Hilton did not ask this naive beauty pageant contestant a loaded question because he was really interested in her answer. He was as always trying to be a muck raker while advancing his own agenda. Also I don't think you have to be homophobic to believe that same sex marriage should not be legal. For many Americans it's not a matter of a lifestyle choice but a matter of economic and legal preference. So to say that she should have a more modern outlook is absurd. Also, to the point regarding a spokesperson for this country needing to posses eloquence .... George W Bush anyone? The whole point of asking these questions in the first place is to see how neutral and placating these girls can be in front of an audience. For not doing that she lost the crown, but isn't that a small price to pay to voice your honest opinion?

I think Perez is the perfect judge - it is only a matter of days before a Miss something is caught by paps in some sex/drugs/partying/alcohol scandal and he will cover it. and CS

Dear Lord, Why is Perez Hilton treated like a credible source for anything but examples of diarrhea from the mouth? Why do people continue to listen to his mean spirited rants? When will you cause his fifteen minutes to end and leave him to reminisce in his home making you tube videos about how relevant he thought he was (but really wasn't)?

I am not knocking her opinion but "opposite marriage" :ROFTL: It like she was a short-circuited by the bright lights and couldn't think clearly!

Obviously this pageant has become a big joke anyway, considering the fact that they allowed an idiotic nobody like Perez Hilton be a judge. And I say good for her for giving an honest answer, even though she knew that most of the audience wouldn't agree with it, and even though it wasn't stated perfectly. Very few of those girls give a perfectly eloquent answer, because they're nervous. It's understandable. She should be very proud of herself.

Oh, for f*ck sakes! No one is denying this chick her right to have an opinion and express it. Please stop making it about that. She's obviously not the brightest bulb in the shed.

did she knew where Africa was? poor girl, I too believe the earrings didn't help her understand... she was giving a "good" answer and then... everything fell "I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage" and wave wave.... the point is if you want to be Miss USA you need answers the people like, you can't start saying you want to give the truth, because... the truth can't handle that hair, or make up, or THOSE EARRINGS! but.. still miss teen "such as" is the best!

I think he only slip up was when she started to say " in my Country" which she quickly cleaned up. However while I don't agree with her I think she has a right to believe that, those are her and her families values. I also think that this is a beauty pageant and that Miss America/Miss USA doesn't truly represent America she's not voted on by the people she's not nominated etc so what's the big deal?

First of all the only thing I share in agreement with P.H. is our mutual desire for all people to be treated equally by our government. Otherwise he's an ass. There was no reason to call Ms. California a dumb b!+ch, he could have pointedly disagreed with her on an intellectual level with out sounding like an adolescent with half a brain. He did nothing to advance our cause with his attitude and choice of words towards the situation. His YouTube spot did nothing but serve the indulgent fits of a mad diva and serve to harden the beliefs that we're trying to change in people like Ms. California. Do you honestly think that people are going to listen to a chaotic tantrum like that and have second thoughts about life long beliefs that were nurtured in to them as they're not. Now as for Ms. California obviously I disagree with her opinion on the matter. However if I were in her shoes and I wanted to stay true to my self/beliefs and still remain relatively politically correct I probably would have said (although my personal religious beliefs do not support same sex union that is my life. However I do believe politically that states should have the right to decide for them selves and if they all decide to do so then that is the will of the majority).

"Pathetically, it seems like she was trying to make everyone happy!" -Bodhar #6 Oh, really? Telling a gay person to his face that you don't believe in gay marriage is trying to make everyone happy? It may not have come out in the most elequent of terms, but it took guts and I say good for her!

What is Perez Hilton doing judging a beauty contest? Update: "In an exclusive interview with's Courtney Friel, Miss California says her phone has been ringing off the hook with people offering her support after she took on a question about gay marriage on Sunday night's Miss USA telecast.",2933,517228,00.html

It didn't come across to me that she was against gay people as somebody said up there^, but rather that she was opposed to gay marriage. I don't understand the uproar, everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I don't think her opinion is offensive at all, it's not like she say 'hang all gays'...

I have to say I'm kind of appalled at people sh*tting on her for having an opinion that differs from there's. SO what if she is not for gay marriage. She is allowed to have that opinion. Its not fair that you make people who have a different opinion from the majority feel like they should just shut up and put up...or lie. The only error i see here is that she called it 'opposite marriage'. That was pretty....weird. :p

She's entitled to her own opinions, but I don't think that someone who obviously can't give public speeches should be representing her country.

I don't think she should be punished for answering with her honest opinion, we should at least be able to make fun of her for not even understanding the question and that wonderful term, "opposite marriage". that just made my day. (yes, I loathe beautiful-yet-stupid beauty contest participants).

Personally, I think she deserves to lose the Miss USA title. Clearly, she shouldn't be representing the USA when she alienated a large group of people in the U.S. Also, she had some nerve to say what she did to Perez Hilton's face, a gay man. She could have expressed her opinion more respectfully, and with grace. She was rude, and practically hostile. I'm glad she's not Miss USA. She's a disgrace.

Well, she just sounds incoherent and not eloquent (I thought that one of the requirement is for the contestants to be rather eloquent), I don't have a problem with her belief at all. As for Perez, I don't even care about what he thinks so I'm not even checking out his 'response.' Not a fan of his. AT ALL.

Her opinion is her opinion. She is entitled to say what she wants. However, Perez Hilton can bite it. Seriously, he thinks it's okay to call a woman a bitch; yet, he'd cry a river if she called him a derogatory term regarding his sexuality. He's a pig. Don't ask questions where you fear the answer. Candace87, she would've been a liar, if she said what you wanted her to say. The question wasn't appropriate at all. It was entrapment for ratings.
