Muslims Barred From Picture at Obama Event
Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit on Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate. The campaign has apologized to the women, both Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally.

I thought this story was really interesting...mostly because although I empathize with these women, I also understand why some Obama volunteers would think this way. I think Obama was hoping to run his campaign a certain way (i.e. civil and in a non-demeaning manner), didn't expect the viciousness he's encountered (yeah yeah I know he should have expected it) and now has to watch his EVERY move and EVERY word (including those around him). It's quite obvious how ignorantly and easily voters opinions can be changed (from the many comments I've read on various blogs, from the various controversies that seem to have swayed voters during the primaries etc). I can understand needing to be extra careful. It's a sad reality that we have people who will judge a candidate based on such superficiality and their own false perceptions rather than his policies and actions.

I take this with a HUGE grain of salt as the people that asked them to move were volunteers. There is no way to know if this was directed by his campaign.

You were used as an example of a non-Obama supporting voter.

I haven't been to the site because I have not heard something that I felt needed to be checked. I don't believe any of the things you just wrote, so not sure why I need to go to a site just to have it confirmed.

Maybe these people were Team Red and they snuck in and "volunteered." Wa ha ha ha. (That's my evil laugh.) :pucca:

haha! SB I was thinking the same thing! who knows!

Steph I honestly haven't been to the site, so I don't know the stories they are putting up there. I assumed that they were more factually based than the ones you mentioned. Apprently I was wrong! What I meant by that last part is that because Obama is still a baby in terms of politics and time in the public eye, there are points about him that may turn out to be valid because we simply don't know enough about the man to come to concrete conclusions. Clearly, none of those stories you mentioned are those kinds of points.

So is this two more votes for McCain?

Wow, the claws come out so easily. Many times volunteers at events are just normal people trying to help the process. It isn't like Obama went up to these women and asked them to move. Volunteers are human, and they do make offensive mistakes.

"Could it be because some are valid points?" Cab, I like you a great deal, but that's a pretty nasty shot. Since you took it, please, tell me the valid points to these stories: -Michelle Obama Says “Whitey” On a Tape -Barack Obama is hiding his birth certificate -Barack Obama is a Muslim -Barack Obama attended a radical madrassa -Senator Obama was sworn into the US Senate using the Koran -Barack Obama Won't Say The Pledge of Allegiance/Won't Put His Hand Over His Heart

Maybe the question isn't how many times someone has checked it, but why is it necessary in the first place? Could it be because some are valid points?

I haven't checked his fancy schmancy debunking website but sometimes it seems like all it takes is picture to make people go off on Barack HUSSEIN!!!!!!! Obama/Osama.
stephley stephley 9 years
How many times have you, or 3M or Cine checked the fancy schmantzy website debunking myths to have the myths you believe debunked? I don't know if he'll apologize, but I bet we'll see a picture of him with scarf-wearing supporters soon now because I'm sure this will be wrung to shreds on Fox.
hausfrau hausfrau 9 years
Well, he does have fancy schmantzy website to debunk all the myths. So if it did happen, he could have used that instead of asking them to move. Anyone think he will apoligize as well or that the staffers will get canned?

I knew this would evetually happen. I can understand why the women are pissed, I would be too. I think as the campaign moves along there will be more stories like this. Someone is going to feel excluded or say they were told this or the other. The tides are changing.

I can also see how this might rub people the wrong way (Obama's denials of being Muslim, possible implications that he has an issue with Islam), but with all of the Obama/Osama, Barack HUSSEIN Obama slip-ups, they need to see all sides of the issue...
em1282 em1282 9 years
I can really see both sides of this...

That is a tough call. I can see both sides.

No,no - I don't think it's okay to ask them to move, but admittedly, it would cross my mind that the distracting pictures would not be helpful. I'd stand there and wish with all my might that they'd decide to move for a better view from the audience. It would be the same as asking them to move to the back of the bus. Sometimes being an all-inclusive liberal seems to bite you on the butt, and this would be one of those times.

"But for Obama, the old-fashioned image-making contrasts with his promise to transcend identity politics and to embrace all elements of America. The incidents in Michigan, which has one of the largest Arab and Muslim populations in the country, also raise an aspect of his campaign that sometimes rubs Muslims the wrong way: The candidate has vigorously denied a false, viral rumor that he himself is Muslim. But the denials seem to some at times to imply that there is something wrong with the faith, though Obama occasionally adds that he means no disrespect to Islam." Obama wants your vote but check your headscarves at the door.

I don't think that makes it ok to ask them to move though. Isn't it a bit hypocritical?? I mean why not tell them to move to the back of the bus?
stephley stephley 9 years
I'd be pissed, but as a campaign volunteer I'd have been concerned about the photos and claims it would lead to... don't know if I'd have asked them to move but I would definitely have thought about it.
hausfrau hausfrau 9 years
I don't blame them for being pissed! I'd be pissed too.
