NY Election Mix-Up: "Osama" On the Ballot

Click to Read

NY Election Mix-Up: "Osama" on the Ballot Who is running for president? In an upstate New York county, hundreds of voters have been sent absentee ballots in which they could vote for "Barack Osama." The absentee ballots sent to voters in Rensselaer County identified the two presidential candidates as "Barack Osama" and "John McCain." In the United States, the best-known person named Osama is Osama bin Laden, leader of the al Qaeda terrorist group.

The only way it could be a typo was if the person was distracted by a conversation, and somehow saw misread Obama as Osama. I also agree that that situation is somewhat unlikely.

Delia- exactly. Of all the 26 letters of the alphabet, and of the 11 letters in Obama's name, seriously what are the odds that the "b" in his last name would accidentally get replaced by an "s" and further, that no one would proofread a presidential voting ballot? It's not a huge conspiracy, but it was intentional, there is no way to argue logically that this was unintentional or a typo!

I'd think the most common typo would be Ocama or Ovama, now that you mention it. "S" isn't even close to the "B"; you don't even use the same finger to type it.

I am FAR from a conspiracy nut, but there's a mile of difference between mistyping something in your day-to-day life and mistyping something on a presidential ballot. I'm a print designer, and believe me - everything should be checked over incredibly carefully before going to print. And really...what are the odds that an "honest" mistake would result in "Osama?"

This sounds like a joke, I can't believe it's real. So, I guess we should just print some ballots with "John McLadin" and we'll be square.

If this is a mistake then is is quite a coincidence. I think it was on purpose, not to sway voters or any big conspiracy, but it was partly done as a bad joke and partly as just something anti-Obama.

I don't know how they're "done". Team, we need a post editor please! LOL

I don't know how it could happen on 1 of every 13, but I'm GUESSING that it's because different people are typing/printing them up and one person typed their list in incorrectly. I don't know how they're so that's a totally UNeducated guess.

lol this reminds me of the 30 rock episode when one of the characters went on Hardball and called for the killing of Obama and voting Osama Bin laden into office

This is a very discouragin thing to read. How could it have only happened on one of every 13 ballots? :?

They won't be able to vote twice because don't they have voter names on them?

I have too. Names like Julie I sometimes write Julia instead. Or, because of the industry I'm in, every time I try to type ship I end up with shipper (I just did it writing this! LOL)

I tend to think stuff like this is a mistake. otherwise you wander into being a conspiracy nut.

How often have you see a presidential ballot with one candidate's name spelled incorrectly? They're usually checked pretty carefully - a misspelling could lead to a serious challenge. How odd is it that THAT spelling mistake came up? Personally, I'm much more likely to leave the 'c' out of Barack than switch a 'b' out for an 's' in Obama.
Frank-y-Ava Frank-y-Ava 8 years
I've written Barack Osama a few times, I'd like to think this was a mistake.

There's no way to know if this was intentional or not.

When my name is misspelled (Sara instead of Sarah), I've been known to put a big fat "H" at the end of wherever it was written. I think if I received one of those ballots I'd do the same. I'm passive-aggressive that way.... ;)
