This Isn't Just a Normal Box of Candy — It Teaches a Lesson About Toxic Relationships

Feb 18 2019 - 9:35am

"Can a chocolate teach you how to love better?" That's the question behind the One Love Foundation's latest campaign [1], and after learning more about the powerful initiative, your answer to that question just might be yes.

One Love launched in 2012 in honor of Yeardley Love, a 22-year-old college student who was killed by her ex-boyfriend [2]. Her family started the foundation to educate young people about the signs of relationship abuse [3] so that others don't share Yeardley's unfortunate fate. This year, the organization debuted its second annual #LoveBetter campaign, using a seemingly normal box of Valentine's Day candies to spark a conversation about what constitutes healthy and unhealthy relationships.

The container of confections features eight treats with custom-made flavors — four represent positive relationship behaviors, while the others symbolize negative ones. For example, sabotage comes to life in the form of a hot pepper preserve-infused chocolate, whereas a candy filled with half sunflower butter and half jelly is meant to denote equality. A tasty treat with an important message about love? We're definitely on board with that!

The #LoveBetter box of chocolates unfortunately isn't available for purchase, but you can enter a contest on the foundation's Instagram [5] to win one of the 20 boxes it's giving away to social media followers. Take an up-close look at the candies ahead to learn about the various relationship characteristics they represent.
