PDA Etiquette Rules

The 3 Rules of PDA Etiquette

Here's a post from OnSugar blog My DISFunkshion.

PDA — Public Display of Affection. We have all seen it. Some of us may have even participated in it. I even let out the occasional "aww" when I see a couple that is clearly into one another.

But, I am also sure that we have all seen that couple who just makes even that simplest gestures of affection seem grotesque. I am all for love and I do understand that people want to show the world how much they care about a person.

However, some folks need to be aware that everyone is not okay with witnessing excessive kissing and heavy petting in a public setting.

So, what is okay you ask?

Here are a few tips on acceptable PDA protocol:

  1. Of course hand holding and hugs (without fondling) are acceptable
  2. Kissing is also suitable but should be done in good taste
  3. And when in doubt don’t do anything in public that you wouldn’t want your grandma to see.

So if you must grope and squeeze please as the saying goes "Get a room!"

PDA can actually be kind of sweet, EXCEPT if you are that annoying friend who always brings her boyfriend with her wherever she goes, even if it's supposed to be a girls night, and is constantly making out/sitting on his lap/touching his hair/ massaging his back etc. while other people are trying to have a conversation with you or you're in a group. It just comes off as immature and ONLY annoys everyone around you.

Hmmm... whoever made up the 'grandma rule' obviously doesn't know how wild my grandma is. End of the wedding reception, hot groomsman, free booze, you know how it goes; grandma was so drunk they had to carry her out to the car. So what if I exchanged a few sloppy kisses in front of her? She probably doesn't even remember it. I am proud to be a repeat PDA offender. I have no problem exchanging a quick kiss in public and I'll even slip a little tongue in if I've been drinking. I'm a passionate person, sometimes I just can't control myself. Right on sloane about making out in front of kids, I can't stand that.

Ewh, moaning is too far!! To skigurl that is incredibly awkward! Why wouldn't she sit on a chair like a respectable lady? I don't mind seeing others peoples PDA because I know how in love I am so I get it, if that makes sense? But, there is defiantly overkill on that. To remember aurora, whats wrong with holding hands? There's nothing sexual about that.

i can be pretty affectionate in public, but i've never crossed the line into second and third base. i agree the amount of pda on nyc sidewalks and stoops can be a bit much but then again, nyc is a walking and people watching city. in a city where there isn't such a huge amount of people on the sidewalk at all times people probably engage in inappropriate pda in other public places, lol. when i see people making out for a prolonged time, particularly in front of children i get extremely irritated.

it's so funny that this topic came up. Yesterday my boyfriend and I were in the park near his apt watching the sunset and there were two other couples in the near vicinity who had the same idea. We were pretty low key with my head on his shoulder and we held hands with occasional kisses but mostly sitting and talking. We looked around and one couple, the girl was sitting in the guys lap and they were totally all over each on the bench. The other, the girl straddled him like she was riding him. It was entirely too much for public displays and there were kids around. I'm glad we keep it to what is pretty much the socially acceptable consensus.

PDA of any kind is disgusting to me. Even holding hands. I don't need to see any of that.

The person who has a locker next to me at school always has her boyfriends next to her during locker breaks. They kiss and stand in front of my locker all the time! It not just kissing either, they have some tongue action going on and even MOANING!! Ewwww...that's just way to far.

I think the Grandma guideline is the perfect way to describe how much is too much.

#14 - you guys are married. Obviously he's not ashamed of you. If he's affectionate enough in private, I'd let it go. That's what really matters anyway.

OMG, kcmosinki! There were a couple like this on my bus too! Sitting right next to ME. And what's best about the whole situation - they were actually travelling with a friend. They kept kissing after pretty much every single sentence said by one of them. I'm sure that poor friend wasn't pleased with it too! It's always uncomfortable when you're out with a couple, being a third wheel I really didn't know what to do with my eyes as I didn't want to look... And I could HEAR IT too. It was so disgusting, I couldn't wait for my journey to end...

I agree, Cotedazur, that is disgusting! Personally, my husband and I do have light PDA. We hold hands, or give each other a hug (if we're departing each other, or greeting each other in public). Sometimes we give each other a light peck on the lips. That's the extent of our PDA.

The grandma guideline works for me. Anything past that is just gross. I was on a very full tram at the airport in Vegas and the young couple standing next to me were making out. I could clearly hear them sucking face. F*CK YUCK. I wanted to throw an elbow soooo bad!

What really gets me is when people make PDA-related noises -- either noisy kisses, baby talk, or worst of all, MOANING. Every time my brother-in-law touches his girlfriend - even if it's just a hand on the back of her neck or something - she lets out these really sexual moans. It makes even the most innocent touch seem so disgusting when it's accompanied by a moan!

I think that's a good guideline. my fiance and I are affectionate together, but never would I go for a full-on snog with him while we're out in public.

there's a couple on the bus I ride to work, that kiss each other repeatedly (i think they're engaged because I've seen her browsing bridal mags on the bus). It's like a marathon, she says a sentence, they kiss, he looks at her, kiss, sentence, kiss, breathe, kiss.... ughhh it's really annoying and these are not quiet kisses folks. Needless to say...I am all for PDA but that is just obnoxious.

Yeah, skigurl, I'm the same way. I just don't understand the need to broadcast your affection to everyone. You know you're into each other, so what's the deal? Isn't that enough?

tlsgirl - i also find it so weird when someone sits on someone's lap when there is another seat get off. my cousin's girlfriend does that at the table with the family, and it makes me INSANE! frankly, i wouldn't kiss in front of my grandmother, but that guideline is pretty good...i hold hands, or if we're sitting i might put my hand on his knee, and then every once and awhile we have a peck, but i mean, it's's not like a peck every 5 minutes

PDA's annoy me as well. It's like, what are you trying to prove? Who are trying to convince that you're into each other, me or you?

I hate PDA, so I like the grandma guideline. A peck, hug, or hand-holding is okay with me, but anything with tongue needs to be left at home. Couples who feel the need to always be sitting on each other's laps bug me too. Sit in your own dang seat.

LOL! I'm glad I am not the only that feels this way.

I think exposure to too much PDA growing up in NYC is why I'm so opposed to it now. I use to see couples going to first, second, even third base right on the sidewalk. Gross.

I agree with the guidelines. I think affection is healthy for people even children to see but soft porn is a little much.
