Palin Meets Karzai Without Usual Reporters in Tow

Click to Read

Palin Meets Karzai Without Usual Reporters in Tow Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who has not held a press conference in nearly four weeks of campaigning, on Tuesday barred most pool reporters from her meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the first foreign head of state she has ever met. Journalists protested the campaign's decision to exclude all but photographers and a TV crew from Palin's sessions with foreign leaders. CNN decided to withdraw its TV crew, effectively denying Palin the high visibility she sought for her initial foray into world affairs. The campaign then reversed course.

bella - I haven't done the gangster tour.I know that the Biograph is where Dillenger was shot. It would be interesting to see where the old gangster hangouts are. Which ghost tour did you do? There are so many to choose from.

Everyone's saying that Palin isn't the one running for president, McCain is and we should focus on him. Even Bill and Hillary are saying that it's the top ticket people should ultimately vote for. That's ridiculous. I think the American people have every right to question the experience of the vice presidential candidates.God forbid something happens to the elected president, they are next in line. Thanks em! It's nice to see other Chicagoans on here. :) Have you ever done the Chicago Ghost Tour? Sounds creepy and fun!

"And why are we still comparing this woman to presidential nominees? She's at the bottom of the ticket, I know most of the time it seems like she's on the top but I assure you, she is on the bottom." Thanks, kas, really well-put. And do we really want to get into a Bill Clinton vs. Sarah Palin debate? Come on. Clinton = Rhodes scholar who studied at Oxford. Enough friggin' said. If that makes me an "elitist", so be it. LiberalOnMyMind--I love the picture too! I've lived in Chicago all my life and it's funny how going to certain places make you feel like a tourist. There's so many fun things to do here, though, and it's cool to feel like a tourist sometimes. :)

Thanks Harmony! I took that picture when I did the architectural boat tour last year on birthday. I've lived in Chicago for 8 years and had never done it before. I felt like a tourist! I highly recommend it.

Call me ageist or whatever, but with McCain being 72 I would hold her to a higher standard than any vice presidential candidates in my voting past. Also we know nothing about her, one of the reasons we don't see so much press coverage of Biden is that he has been on the circuit for a while and their is a lot of archival news about him. We hardly know this woman, therefore there is going to be more fresh coverage of her. If she is really a great choice for VP then I would want her to be able to handle the press and world leaders at the same time - she is a multitasking working mom as we are often reminded.

Palin's last minute cram in no way makes her more experienced than Bill Clinton before he was elected. And why are we still comparing this woman to presidential nominees? She's at the bottom of the ticket, I know most of the time it seems like she's on the top but I assure you, she is on the bottom.

I LOVE Campbell Brown of CNN! Did anyone see her call out McCain's camp for being chauvinistic and sexist? Free Sarah Palin! lol.

She can't introduce herself with a camera rolling AND an editorial person present? She might stumble over her name? Your second comment is utterly indefensible. You actually are claiming that as mayor of a small Alaskan town, and governor of that state for LESS than two years, a person who made her first overseas trip last year and just visited troops in Kuwait and Germany, with a layover in Ireland, who lives in a state a part of which is within sight distance of Russia, Palin has more international experience than Bill Clinton - who graduated from Georgetown, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, was elected Arkansas Attorney General and its governor. Just by living in England and going on trade missions to Japan, Taiwan other East Asian nations, Western Europe and the Soviet Union Clinton tops Palin in experience. You've got to use more than Newsbusters for information.

Bill Clinton has a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown, then won a Rhodes Scholarship and studied Government at Oxford, England, so he was ahead of Palin before he ever ran for any office.

Steph - As the next vice president she should begin introducing herself and begin dialogues. Interesting side note. When Clinton was elected president, he had LESS international experience than Palin.

I just heard on the Rachel Maddow show that Sarah Palin is scheduled to meet with Bono. Interesting. Maybe she should talk to the press first.

Dave, what exactly could Palin speak frankly with Karzai about? She's the governor of Alaska so she could speak on state matters, beyond that, she has no authority to say anything important - there was no way he was going to discuss strategy with her.

They know this is a weak point for her and it'll scare the crap out of people to see her screw up.

If the the campaign had every confidence in her, why wouldn't they allow the press? I'd wonder if it was Biden or Obama as well.

I see what you're saying, Dave, but I think it's important that she be able to hold her own with someone like Karzai even if there are news crews around. What you've said actually reinforces the "avoid the press in case she makes a gaffe" perception, which just really is not encouraging.
UnDave35 UnDave35 8 years
I think the McCain camp wanted Palin to be able to speak frankly with Karzai, and it's hard to be open with news crews waiting to pounce on anything you say.
girlA girlA 8 years
They just don't want her to say anything else stupid and hurt the campaign. (She has a habit of doing that). Meeting with world leaders is a big deal and if she does make a total fool of herself, the McCain campaign doesn't want the world to see that.

I just read an article about the lack of press coverage during her UN visit. From what I remember, some reporters was allowed access when she first met Karzai--they talked about the birth of his child--and then were shooed on out before the substantial talking (if there was any) began. From a strategic standpoint, that just doesn't look good to me. A major legitimate question about her has to do with her foreign policy experience, and whether it extends any further or goes any deeper than being able to see part of Russia from part of Alaska, and all this sort of maneuvering to keep her foreign policy forays from being covered in any substantial way just make it look like someone's hiding something. To be honest, my first thought when the stories began coming out of reporters not being able to write the stories was, "They're afraid she'll make some super huge gaffe, like mixing Iraq up with Iran."
