Paul Ryan on Forcible Rape

VP Hopeful Paul Ryan Distances Himself From "Forcible Rape" Language

Amid the controversy surrounding Congressman Todd Akin's comments that women cannot get pregnant from "legitimate rape," VP hopeful Paul Ryan was asked today about his ties to the congressman, his feelings on what Akin said, and past language he himself used in a bill that was similar to the comments made by Akin. "Rape is rape," Paul Ryan said today in an interview, mirroring President Obama's reaction to Rep. Akin's remarks. But it's not clear Ryan has always held that view.

Ryan recently sponsored the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act with the now infamous Rep. Akin, which originally banned federal funding for abortion except if the pregnancy resulted from "an act of forcible rape or, if a minor, an act of incest." The language distinguishing "forcible rape" from presumably other types of rape was removed after protests from Democrats and activists. Paul Ryan was asked about it today, but he chose to simply reiterate that "rape is rape" for a second time.

Ryan also demurred when asked if he thinks abortion should be illegal even in the cases of rape, saying, "I'm proud of my pro-life record and I stand by my pro-life record in Congress." He continued, "But Mitt Romney is the top of the ticket and Mitt Romney will be president and he will set the policy of the Romney administration." Mitt Romney has said he supports an exception, and we can gather from Ryan's comments that he himself would not support such an exception if he had top billing on the ticket. Watch the clip from Ryan's interview. Do you think this issue will go away any time soon?
