Polygamist Leader Calls His Arrest Religious Prosecution

The leader of a polygamous community in Canada says authorities are engaging in religious persecution by charging him with practicing polygamy.

Winston Blackmore claims there are tens of thousands of polygamists across Canada, but that his religious sect is being targeted and authorities are disregarding his right to religious freedom. He told the media: "This is not about polygamy, to us this is about religious persecution.

Authorities arrested both Blackmore, 52, and another man with polygamous factions in British Columbia. Blackmore is charged with marrying 20 women (that's a lot more than anyone on Big Love!) and Oler is accused of marrying two women. The case will be the first test of Canada's polygamy laws.

As long as the polygamists aren't victimizing young girls, and all the people involved are consenting adults, I don't think there should be a law against this. Though I DO have to say I disagree with it wholeheartedly for the sake of the children that will inevitably be involved. That would be a tough way to grow up.

Hmm... Shadow, how does one go about joining this church? There is some asparagus at my local Stop and shop that has it coming.

Religion is no excuse for ignoring the law - if you don't like it, then work to change the law. Personally I don't care if women want to do this, its their decision. (I mean after all...in the name of has been used as an excuse to do enough wrong in this world already and on the grand scale consenting adults is pretty far down the list. All the same, if I decided tomorrow to make the First Evangelical Church of Unnecessary Harm to Produce and go running around grocery stores stabbing apples, does that make it okay?

the men in this community marry women when they are young (under 20) and the children in this community have a skewed and limited view of the outside world. a female cousin of one of the accused has escaped from this perverted cult and is speaking out against their practices. i am too see that i am not the only one who finds ugly betty quite irritating!

I like Ugly Betty a lot, but couldn't date some one as insecure as her. On an intimate level I just don't have the patience for insecurity that's why they have to be confident all the way with humility of course.

Big Love is one of my favorite shows. Anybody know when Season 3 comes out on DVD?

Funny, shoulder pads always make me think of my mom. She was the queen of those things back in the day.

Oh yes, it is totally about timing! I just have to laugh at how unrealistic Ugly Betty is sometimes! And I thought so, tia...And, now I am thinking of Dynasty, too.

bella, his dog puts up quite a fight--he's this little dachsund mix--and always does something to try to get in the way. He even tries to sit between us on the couch and will immediately lick my face and bring his leash to me when he sees me. They're neck-and-neck in the race right now :rotfl:

Bella, :woohoo: to the Dynasty comparison!!! and yes, lilk, I am definitely kidding about the power-suits.

Em, who's winning?

lil, I've come to accept that it is all about timing. Seriously. Sure, personality, looks, etc. can help, but ultimately I think it just boils down to being in the right (or wrong) place at the right (or wrong!) time. I have two guys fighting over me right now. OK, well, one of them is my bf, and the other is his dog, who totally loves me more and demands all of my attention every time I see him. :)

America Ferrera does do well! And I enjoy watching Betty, but I feel that if I ever knew someone like that in real life, I would want to gouge their eyes out. And tia, I'm guessing you're kidding. I'm a little confused, though.

Tia, you just made me think of Dynasty. Those were true power suits.
em1282 em1282 8 years
I can see her getting on people's nerves because she can be judgmental, but I do like the fact that she has a big heart. I also like how America Fererra plays her--she does a great job.

Heck, if being approachable and not wearing power suits are the keys, why aren't men always fighting over me?
tiabia tiabia 8 years
lil, you're confusing me. Are we doing a crossover between Betty's world and the real world!?! Because in the real world you NEED a power-suit to get the guys...preferably the shoulder-padded variety.

And fighting over them.

Most women I know don't wear designer power suits, either, and they don't have men chasing after them.

Does she have a unibrow?
lilkimbo lilkimbo 8 years
Not unattractive, but not drop-dead gorgeous, either. Honestly, I think her personality is a little annoying, too. That's more what I was getting at.
tiabia tiabia 8 years
because she's approachable, doesn't wear designer power-suits.
