Rhode Island Governor Vetoes Same-Sex Funeral Rights

Rhode Island's state legislature thought it would be a good idea to give same-sex partners the right to plan each other's funerals when one partner passes away. It's a right married couples have, of course. But Gov. Don Carcieri said: not so fast! The socially conservative leader vetoed the bill because it's part of a "disturbing trend" threatening heterosexual marriage. I'm confused. How does a gay person planning a loved one's funeral have anything to do with someone else's marriage?

Those who support the veto point out that Rhode Island recognizes neither gay marriage nor civil unions. Still, many people are shocked that the governor would intervene to deny same-sex partners some comfort during a hard time. The state's attorney general has called the veto "cruel and heartless," and lawmakers in the Democratically-controlled legislature said they would work to override the veto. Hopefully they will succeed!

runningesq: my feeling exactly! If they're trying to protect the 'sanctity' of marriage, attacking gay couples shouldn't be the first on their list.

Gee, well OBVIOUSLY gay marriage threatens the sanctity of hetero marraiges! I mean, clearly quickie celeb marriages (and subsequent divorces 50 hours later), the rampant affairs among elected officials (the Appalician trail, anyone?), and the 50% divorce rate .. that does nothing to threaten the sanctity of hetero unions! DUH!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! It is this kind of action that makes me so mad. I shudder to think at the possibility that this is one of the states that keeps same sex couples away from each other if one is heaven-forbid so sick they are in a coma and not able to speak for themselves.

What do funeral planning rights for two people have to do with destroying someone they don't even know's marriage? Then again, what do two people getting married have to do with destroying a married couple (who doesn't even need to know of the other couple)'s marriage?

WTHeck! I am sorry but I don't care the sexual preference of anyone planning any-one's funeral. It is ridiculous. I am thinking this moron is up for re-election...and if so...I hope he loses big time. I don't think any-one's sexual preference should prevent them from marrying, living together, sharing life, having children, or sadly when they must plan a funeral for the one they love. America seems okay with gays or bisexuals dying to protect our country but refuses to allow them the same rights they are dying to protect for ALL of us.....even the rights of Gov. Don Carcieri who should be ashamed of himself.

Mr. Carcieri, if your heterosexual marriage is so fragile that it is threatened by the mere possibility of a gay person, somewhere in your state, planning the funeral of another gay person, then there is no legislation in the world that can help you.

I think this pretty much confirms for me that people who are homophobic or against gay rights are closeted homosexuals.

This is ridiculous. If a female friend appointed me to take care of funeral arrangements for her after her death, I'd be allowed to do that. Why the heck is this any different?

I'm confused too, Tres. How do same-sex funeral rights threaten heterosexual marriage, exactly?
