Do you know who made which lists? Click and see if you're the "Most Likely to Succeed" in this quiz! (Hint: If the Senator made the top 50 in any of the lists, it counts.)

Well growing up I always heard 'conservative' in the ways I already mentioned (up-tight, close-minded) rather than used the way I think of it now. It might just be because I grew up in a liberal town, but I don't know. I will admit that when I hear the word 'liberal', it's a negative thing, but that's just because I don't like what liberalism means now.

That quiz was kind of tricky.

Both words have connotations, but conservatives have definitely made liberal a dirty word. When's the last time you heard a democratic political candidate use the word to describe himself? But republicans are very eager to let you know how conservative they are. Conservative is only a dirty word if you're fairly liberal. (In general. In my opinion. Insert disclaimer here.)

To me the scariest term of all is 'religious right'. Sends chills down my spine. :) Hey actually that would make a great halloween costume if I could work out the details

Well, you were asking because someone said it, just not someone on this thread. And I agree, liberal has become a dirty word, just like conservative.

I put my name on my av, I'll leave it like that a week or so.

I guess we might be from different places, but I always hear 'conservative' used to mean uptight, or close-minded. If your friend groaned when you said you were liberal, it was probably because he doesn't like liberal ideas, and not because the word has negative connotations in general.

That I did, I was going to fight in honor of your name.

You thought I was the victim of an apple jack?

For a minute, I thought someone jacked your apple.

I know, it's confusing. I kept the same av on purpose!

Torg, I just realized your TS. Thankfully, you kept the apple.

It's funny -- but I never hear conservative used in a negative way. I was with a buddy of mine from work and he was asking me which way do I "go" -- I of course said "as left as they come liberal" -- all I heard after that was a groan and a "oh" -- seems like there a more negative connotations on "liberal" than on conservative.

Well, I think it would be bad if they were called the "conservative media" too, because the media is supposed to be more or less neutral. That said, I think a conservative might use it in a negative way because it goes against their beliefs. But I've heard conservative used in a negative manner for a long time.

Actually I was asking. Seem that all I hear lately is "liberal media" or "liberal" this and that used in a negative (almost scare tactic way). So I was just wondering when did the word "liberal" become a bad term?

I had a chemistry teacher that frequently put "don't know don't care" on his multiple choice tests.
