Should Bernie Madoff Go to Jail For Life?

Yesterday news broke that Bernie Madoff will plead guilty to massive fraud, a plea that will most likely result in a life sentence and $177 billion in criminal forfeitures (good luck!). The federal prosecutor told the judge that there is no plea agreement with Madoff.

In addition to guaranteed jail time, a speedy plea could also prevent a full investigation that would come from a long trial. And since there doesn't appear to be a plea bargain, Bernie Madoff might not have to give up any names or information.

But back to the punishment — do you think a life sentence for a crime other than murder goes too far, or is Bernie getting what he deserves?

I wouldn't trust Madoff to do my accounting, Hypnoticmix! I agree with Stephley. Dude knew what he was doing, he STOLE, and he needs to pay.

At least two of Madoff's investors have committed suicide, and he's wiped out the savings of a number of people - losing money they planned to retire on or send their children to school with. The guy knew exactly what he was doing, so I do see him as a threat to society. I see nothing wrong with going after the money his wife claims is her separate money - they've been married a long time and by pleading he avoids a trial that could have revealed how much his family knew or suspected and for how long.

I just had this spontanious idea as I hit enter on my last comment. Although he is a BIATCH for what he did why on earth waste brilliant minds like his by letting them just rot in jail while we take care of them with our money. I think that Madoff and all others who have the education/experience to provide a service should do it as a free service to the public. In his case financial services, tax filing ect.

i think he should be in there for life because he is a definite threat to society. people like him have a compulsion to make, spend and have money. there isnt a restraining order that can keep him from talking to people or from financial institutions, if he is ever let out of prison, its just a matter of time before he does it again.

I think he should have to work a job, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, until he has paid everyone back the money they lost to him. That would be the ONLY reason he shouldn't be in prison. Oh, and his ex-wife, should get to keep her money.
