Straight Couples in UK Prove Point by Getting Rejected From Civil Partnerships

Straight Couples Now Want Their Gay Rights

I admit, I cringe when I hear historically nonmarginalized groups are seeking equality, but now the UK has a point: highlight the English government's nonsensical law that bans heterosexual couples from civil partnerships just as it bans gay couples from marriage.

Today a straight couple, Ian Goggin and Kristin Skarsholt, posed for a photograph after being refused a civil partnership in Bristol, England. They're part of a larger campaign, organized by the LGBT community, called Equal Love, which is sending one couple per week (four gay and four straight) to apply for marriage and civil partnerships until Dec. 9.

Meanwhile, Equal Love's legal team is taking careful notes and crafting an argument to "overturn the twin bans on same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships in the United Kingdom."

Considering this campaign was started by the gay community, I'd say Equal Love really wants to illustrate the ridiculousness of gay marriage bans by using straight couples, which may be more palpable to the court and the public. Not necessarily a bad thing and probably quite smart.

But do you think straight couples really want civil partnerships, or are they just helping the gay marriage cause out?

Civil partnerships are "separate but equal" so I think it's kind of interesting to see hetero couples using it to show how incredibly ridiculous the entire notion of it is.

This whole 'civil partnership' thing is so ridiculous. 'Look, we're gonna let you have equal rights...but we're gonna call it something else, and not really make it equal, k?'
