Teenager Delivers Baby and Walks to Hospital
Embarrassed and frightened by her expectant status, Xochitl Parra, 17, kept her pregnancy a secret. When the high-school sophomore began to get ready for a typical school day, she knew something was different. In the shower feeling contractions and fearing what was to come, Xochitl sat down and pushed baby Alejandro out into the world. She quickly wrapped him in a blanket though they were still attached by the umbilical cord and walked the new baby and the placenta to the hospital four blocks away. According to an Associated Press article, both baby boy and mother are doing well.

While abstinence is 100% effective it clearly does NOT work for many teenagers in today's society (and frankly I will go as far as to say it did not even work in the Victorian times). Unfortunately, abstinence-only programs fail for a variety of reasons that I am happy to find links for you to read about if you wish. Seeing as they do not work -no matter what your moral views- you have to focus on a program that DOES work. Preventing teenage pregnancy should be the focus here and if that means teaching teenagers about birth control and the consequences of unprotected sex, then I am behind it all the way. There also needs to be counseling for teenagers who engage in this but have no one to turn to as the case with the teenage girl in the article.

I agree UnDave, but I think the debate is whether we can accept the fact that teenagers will be driven by more profound desires that can not be reigned in by a simplistic idea. Believe me, in a perfect world, no one would have sex unless they were ready for the consequences, but when you're 16 and alone with someone, no abstinence brochure in the world is going to stop what comes natural.

You guys make me laugh. :rotfl: The whole point of abstinence is, if you don't do it, you don't get pregnant. How is that now 100% effective?

Stephley, you said it right. And Rac your comment is so good, LOL. This young lady made choices that she may be content with or she may regret them but the fact that she cannot turn to her parents it is a very sad state her family is in. AC most men not related to a child is a beater or molester. SO from your comment we should believe that in blended families most of the children are victims of abuse...Statistic say children are safer now than 20 years ago.

I am sorry to say this but teen pregnancy has been around a great deal longer than Jamie Lynn Spears and, I would posit, before pop culture. Even someone who believes in a more conservative-based morality, such as myself, has to realize that the biological imperative to procreate is greater than any abstinence program anyone will ever design. I'm afraid on this issue, I'm more of a liberal and believe that educating teenagers and giving them information is the best approach.

Another anchor baby for Aztlan! Did you also notice (in the AP article) that she's a 17-year -old high school *sophomore*?

If Society approved of Abstinence it just might become popular. But as long as pop culture looks on pregnancy as if it were burping and not really all that important in a girl's portfolio, we'll have teens and preteens giving birth and later wondering why their lives didn't have the same outcome as Jamie Lynn Spears. Statistically speaking, the boyfriend (who isn't the father) of a girl with children is likely to abuse her children and should NEVER be left alone with them. It's an epidemic of abuse which could have been prevented had the girl used abstinence in the first place.

Abstinence is great idea because teenagers are usually known for their restraint.

UD, I question your 100% of the time statistic - you have to count the mistakes that happen when someone's using abstinence as their method of choice.

Exactly Stephley. It saddens me so much to see and hear about teenagers who are afraid to go to their parents when they're in need. Obviously the communication and relationship had been broken somewhere along the way. So many parents these days are clueless. People really need to get back to putting family first.

I would feel like a failure as a mother if my daughter was too embarrassed to ask for my help and instead went through so much pain and difficulty alone. And if I hadn't noticed beforehand that something was going on with my child.
