Things to Do While Traveling

What's Your Traveling Ritual?

When Hillary Clinton flew back to New York Monday night for Chelsea's wedding Saturday, she ditched her work papers for the Washington Post, New York Times, SkyMall, and the Mayo Clinic Women's Healthsource — and it was promptly announced on Twitter.

Fortunately, I'll probably never read about my traveling habits unless I write about them like, say, now. I love that you're in no way expected to be a productive human being for those hours. Internet access on planes may threaten this, but traveling is still an artificial world where we check out our day-to-day habits at the check-in counter.

Drinking in the afternoon? Why not. Reading trash? A requirement. Traveling is a hedonist's pursuit — so how do you pass the time?

A couple of trashy magazines and on board entertainment keep me occupied!

I love to travel but I wouldn't say I have a ritual. Usually I have a playlist and once I get to the airport I ususally get a drink (usually a latte or iced tea) and a pastry. I bring what ever book I am reading along with my journal. When i am there I usually grab a couple of good magazines (like Vogue, Vanity Fair and/or Rolling Stone) and a tabloid like the NY Post (my fave :)). If someone I am traveling with has a computer then I don't bring mine but if not then I take mine, but I try to only use it once a day and not on the plane. But I agree with Girl Jen people watching at airports is so much fun!!

I read a boatload of magazines while listening to my iPod while on the airplane. Beforehand, I read a boatload of magazines while drinking coffee. Sometimes, I opt for a book rather than the magazines. Depends on my mood. And sometimes, if traveling in the middle of a semester, I'm forced to ditch leisure reading and study instead. Also, and this might sound terribly cheap to some people, but if you happen to have a seat in the back of the airplane, take a quick look at the seats as you're exiting the plane. I once got the September issue of Vogue, an issue of Elle, and an issue of Jane (before it went kaput). People leave behind good magazines sometimes and you get your next reading free! I think it's an excellent impromptu recycling program, and ever since the day that I collected three magazines on my way out of the plane, I leave behind my magazines for someone else too.

I always arrive at the airport super early, about three hours before my flight time...not because I'm worried about missing the plane, just because the people-watching at the airport is SO interesting! :D It's going to be years before I can afford to fly again, though. :sigh:

I like to find an amazing cup of coffee, sit at a cafe table and people-watch for hours. Bliss!

Starbucks and a trashy read or two. Usually a book, but sometimes I'll go for a magazine. But not a weekly cause I'll read that before the plane takes off. Usually Elle or Women's Health or something. But always Starbucks and a pastry. :)

I'm a writer and I travel during the end of the summer. By this time, I'm always finishing up some type of manuscript, so I edit that if I'm not exhausted from preparing to fly. If I'm in the mood to do something mindless, sudoku is another activity that I save for long flights. And if all else fails, I'll watch tv. One thing I can't stand though is Cosmopolitan magazines. I just have no interest and they bore me to tears. I rather read Time, BusinessWeek or Vogue.

Traveling used to be the only time when I'd buy magazines like Glamour and Cosmopolitan. They bore me now, though. Does eating all the time without regrets count as a ritual? hehe I certainly do that. And I always write tons of postcards. And buy a shotglass everywhere I go.

I love reading magazines (particularly People, Entertainment Weekly and Food Network). I also love to read chicklit as well. A Devil Wears Prada is one of my favorite chicklit books! :)

Ooooh I loved that book! Yes, yes, I love to read chicklit (a very light read) whenever I travel. And I buy a few trashy magazines...maybe a Glamour and an US. Even when travelling for work, I try not to read work stuff. And I sometimes splurge a little on my diet when I travel too, and get something a little yummy/unhealthy, especially if I'm in the first class lounge and it's all free. And when I'm actually on vacation for pleasure, I always drink in the afternoon (sometimes morning), and just seriously take it easy!
