Vatican Adds Deadly Sins

The Vatican Updates the Seven Deadly Sins

Looks like they might have to remake the movie Se7en, because the Vatican just added a whole shebang of new sins — hot, fresh, and updated for the modern world. The list was overhauled in response to the Pope deploring the “decreasing sense of sin” in today’s “secularized world” as well as falling numbers of Roman Catholics going to confession.

What's new on the list? Pollution, drugs, and genetic manipulations, for starters. According to the new rulings, genetic manipulations are considered violations of the fundamental rights of human nature, drugs "weaken the mind and obscure intelligence," — and all this is combined with the widening social and economic differences between the rich and the poor "cause an unbearable social injustice."

Why the update? To find out,

. In the increased age of global communication, while sin in the past was thought of as an individual matter, it now has “social resonance.” Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body said “you offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming, or coveting your neighbor’s wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos."

Was it high time for an update? Do you agree with the new additions?

Second thoing is I have to go somewhere now ,alas , my job requires me to be on call which is what just happened. I'll check back as soon as I can.

No disrespect taken :) I suppose it's because the Catholic Church has a governing establishment utterly different and separate from other Christian denominations--the Vatican, the Pope, etc. as well as some beliefs contested by other Christian denominations, which have more in common with each other (to my knowledge) than with the Catholic Church. No, I have not been born again, nor do I affiliate myself with any religious organization anymore. (This conversation is probably not very interesting to other readers of this board anymore, since it's more of a chat between you and me--why don't we move it to guestbooks or PMs? I would like to continue our discussion :) )

To Jude C : Just curious , no disrespect meant, but I would like to know why Catholics refer to themselves as catholic instead of christian.

To Jude C: I sent the last before I got your comment. I know catholic are christian. Have you been born again ?

Interesting. I may just check some of the secular writings out. I have heard rabbis and Talmudic commentators make much the same argument for the truth of the Revelation at Mount Sinai.

To Jude C : Have you ever heard of the 500 witnesses to the resurrection? Accounts of these people who saw Jesus after he arose and before he ascended to heaven. Not only are there records in the bible but in secular writings as well. The historian , Josephus , for one. Simon Greenleaf , was a man who started out to prove Christianity wrong. You can read his conclusions in his writngs, " Proofs of evidence.." These are two but there are others we can talk about.

To: AuH20 , One can tell by your pic that you are not a liberal. At least those of us who are old enough to remember anything before Ronald Reagan , John Wayne and apple pie. If you had been PC in the 60's you would have been Prez. What I wanted to say was I appreciate your comment about a "herd". Do you mind if I use your line on that? I can't think of a better way of saying it.

I'm curious to know what that proof is, SavedbyGrace.

To thomas92107 Your comment, "Since there are no god..." We believe in one God. Did you know that there is more proof of the resurrection of Jesus Christ than there is of any other event in history?

WOW.WOW. stunned silence.. Since there are no gods(zues, athena, pan, santa, liliputians, easter bunny, or other wise) how do you justify the expense for this thread. Human biological evolution is the most tested bank of facts in the library of congress and in the history of the world. How do you get around that? and the dino bones and the cavemen and geology and archeology and paeontology? If you had something other than your opinion I guess you would have stated it by now, huh. Luckily for all human kind an individuals opinion is not allowed in science. Otherwise we would all still believe in the tooth fairy. Im sure I've just ruined it for some of you.

Catholic "guilt": another one of those religion stereotypes that people talk about which I have no idea of what they are basing it on, except that they must have seen it in a movie, on television show, or in a comic strip and found it humorous so they felt a need to perpetuate the same old, tired, worn out stereotypes. ;)

Hey bella, "Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, responsible for absolving Catholics from their sins, named the new mortal sins in an interview with the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, yesterday." Oh! Guess they mean business! This article continues: "Polluting, genetic engineering, obscene riches, taking drugs, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice join the original seven deadly sins defined by Pope Gregory the Great in the sixth century: pride, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, wrath and sloth." So maybe they're destined to be the "new classics?"

Eh, whatever. I guess all those Catholics who used invitro-fertization are screwed. Happy families or not.
